I think the Raiders, Titans Bengals and Jaguars should change their names. Too scary. Dolphins can be scary too. ;)

And look at how horses have been abused over the years Colts and Broncos? Come on. Did you ever see how badly a bronco is abused in a rodeo? Really offensive that a team would use such a name.

So we don't offend or upset anyone just give each team a number and they will be referred to as such.

White Man: "Hey I know we treated you like shit because we didn't think you should be treated with equality or dignity and respect, but we love to borrow for free, some of your commendable qualities to promote our own sport team of a White Man's game".

Indigenous Guy thinking to himself: (Go fuck yourself).
So it comes down to finances,...and,... "Go fuck yourself,...white man",...yep,... seems to be the ongoing theme,...and NEITHER has made either party happy.

And more likely,...never will.

Were given independence and continually the white mans money.

Anybody who thinks that both sides could have lived in harmony,...watch's too many Disney movies.

Nobody treated anybody with respect or dignity then,...if you think otherwise,...watching too many "G" rated movies.

Honestly, it would be much better to hear from indigenous members regarding this sensitive issue (pros vs cons).

So let me get this straight,...the sole reason sports teams got together and decided to create names for their teams that included mascots based on natives,...was to say,... "we are sorry",...by honoring them.

Even IF that was true,...what would be wrong with that,...???

I never said anything about apology being an element. I never said anything about teams honouring. What I was talking about was disputing the idea that a cartoon caricature is a respectful way to honour a group of people.

[h=3]"Canada's top court extends rights to nearly 600,000 Métis, non-status ...[/h]globalnews.ca/.../supreme-court-ruling-on-rights-of-metis-off-reserve-in...

I think I'll still call them "Indians" but agree the term should not be a sports team logo if they find it offensive.
I think I see where you are going with that link. I think though that is a product of the laws being created a long time ago and I imagine changing the wording from indian to native is probably a long arduous/costly process.

And what term you use in the privacy of your own home is your deal. At work, in public not so much so. I'm sure at home I'm not as politically correct as I should be all the time.

According to the article, the word, Native, is too broad and widely used which has different meanings.

Unfortunately, I don't even know what to call them now. Kind of strange as they have been here for years and yet we have trouble finding the appropriate name for them.
I hear you. We live in a politically correct charged age. I remember when Mayor Ford referred to Asians as Orientals in a complimentary way and was severely criticized for it. Also, I recently made the inexcusable mistake of calling dwarfs midgets.

Go and reread your posts about what you have said,...and there's going to be a test,...

Sorry. I don't think there can be qualifiers in here. If they are OK with the government using it in an officiall capacity there is no substance to any claims that it is not ok for team nicknames.

Lee, I really commend your forward and sensitive thinking and I hope you'd agree with my concept for advancing that mindset.

I think it is time to eliminate bullying in pro sports, especially football and hockey.

It is totally unfair for one player to have an advantage over another simply because they are bigger and/or stronger and/or faster than an opponent. Can you imagine how poorly that physically inferior (through no fault of his own) player feels after being dominated within the rules on the playing field.

It affects their confidence, that of their loved ones, their coaches, their feeling of self-worth and most importantly future earnings. Who is going to give them the big contract they deserve when they see that a player who is superior for no other reason than their physical assets can dominate them. Talk about stress that is traumatic!!!

I think if a team is winning the best players on the winning team will play for the losing team.

Actually even better no scores and at the end of the season everyone is champions because they all tried!
