Bond originally carried a Beretta (a model 418 in the novel From Russia with Love; and a model 1934 in the film Dr. No). In the novel, his pistol (with a suppressor attached) gets caught on his clothing, and he gets stabbed with a poisoned knife; in the film, his pistol jams while on assignment, which results in him being hospitalized for six months with an undisclosed injury. In both instances, after his recovery, he's issued a Walther PPK as his replacement sidearm.
