York Police officer killed in head on collision with a porsche

Happened at 6am this morning on Hiway 427, cop was driving into work, my bet is that the 23 year old Porshe Cayenne driver was DUI/speeding/stunt driving.

Terrible tragedy. Actually didn't occur on Hwy 427 this was on Major Mackenzie Drive in Markham. From the footage could not see any remnants of the Porsche Cayenne but that's an SUV and an SUV usually beats a mid sized sedan. Could be a case of the driver falling asleep at the wheel or having a health episode but I kinda agree with you likelier this was a case of excessive speed and/or intoxication.

probably because drunk drivers don't brace for impact and because their body is not rigid there is less likelihood of severe trauma.

Speaking from experience, that's true. Although I haven't impacted another moving object, I have collided with a couple of stationary objects that jumped out in front of me.

driver suppose to be a 23 yr old...not sure if he's intoxicated or just an asshole in the road...hey...cop could be rushing to go to work too...this was a head on collision...so most likely fatal...

From looking at the sun and shadows in some frames of the overhead video it looks like the Honda was westbound, in the westbound lane when the eastbound Porsche crossed into the westbound lanes.

This also makes sense if Constable Gillespie was driving to work in 2 District (Richmond Hill).

I'm actually surprised with the head-on crashworthiness and survivability of the Porsche.

What a tragedy. The poor guy was just going to work to "serve and protect" and he's gone, his family will never be the same.

I have NO idea what caused the Porsche driver to cross the road but it's a good reminder to always pay attention. I admit I used to be guilty of sometimes texting and drifting out of my lane. Never more than a tire or so but still... shows that my eyes always need to be on the road.

Just my thoughts. The engine on the Honda became detached. I don’t think that means he was doing a 100 or anything… but we all do it.

In addition to the Impaired charge, there is evidence that the driver was driving crazy earlier too. So, a Dangerous Driving causing death charge was also laid.

23 yo driver too. Driving a Porsche at dawn? Impaired? Parents? Nice family.

He's looking at probably minimum 5 to 10 years in prison too.

On Thursday, Peel police announced that they had charged the Porsche driver, identified as Markham resident Haoju Zhou, with impaired operation causing death and dangerous operation causing death.
