The winter offensive did not occur because the ground in Urkanine did not freeze ! This winter we had La Niña effect. The weather in Europe and in Ukraine was warm. That even resulted of EU not using up all the natural gas. And all over the world we had a warm winter ! Hard to predict winter! Need the Ukraine ground to frozen solid for 6 weeks in order the tanks and truck and artillery to drive through Ukraine to Odessa and to Kiev! Didnt you know the world have a surplus of semiconductor and over supply of Inventory due to coming recession and banking crisis ! In all honesty I dont think Russia is going to Kyiv. They tried once and they failed. I think Russia will be stuck in Donbas and there will be low grade violence for several years before Russia, Ukraine and the west are all fatigued. Then they will come to the table to talk and work out some form of compromise. I think that is what will happen.

After the Kherson and Kharkiv counter-offensives, the Ukrainian forces were depleted and they needed a breather. The Russians obligingly took up the challenge of assaulting the 3 most fortified towns in Eastern Europe - Bakhmut, Avdiivka and Voludar(spelling ?) and accomplished fuck-all after several months of heavy casualties.
It's going to be difficult to push Russia out of Donbas, because they too have heavily fortified their towns.
