  • Microsoft’s list of 40 jobs that have high crossover with AI is going viral—and professionals are warning that it highlights the careers “most at risk,” with historians, translators, and sales reps high on the list. While Microsoft says high applicability doesn’t automatically mean those roles will be killed by AI, employers have been putting a pause on hiring and cutting roles to make way for enhanced productivity.
As companies like Amazon publicly announce AI-driven workforce reductions, workers are scrambling to understand which careers might soon disappear and be outsourced to technology.

A new report from Microsoft researchers studying the occupational implications of generative AI offers some clarity.
Translators, historians, and writers are among the roles with the highest AI applicability score, meaning the job’s tasks are most closely aligned with AI’s current abilities, according to the report released this month that ranked professions. Customer service and sales representatives—which make up about 5 million jobs in the U.S.—will also have to compete with AI.

AD
Overall, the jobs most exposed are ones that involve knowledge work—like people doing computer, math, or administrative work in an office, the researchers wrote. Sales jobs are also high on the list, since they often involve sharing and explaining information.
While Microsoft said high applicability doesn’t automatically mean those jobs will necessarily be replaced by AI, the list of roles quickly went viral—with professionals deeming them “most at risk.” It comes as companies like IBM have been freezing thousands of would-be new roles that it expects AI will take over in the next 5 years, and graduates in the U.K. are facing the worst job market since 2018 as employers pause hiring and use AI to cut costs, says Indeed.

Of course, there are some jobs that are unlikely to be touched by AI: Dredge operators; bridge and lock tenders; and water treatment plant and system operators are among the jobs with virtually no generative AI exposure, thanks in part to their hands-on equipment requirements.
Still, business leaders like Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang have said that every job will be touched by AI in some way, and so it’s best to embrace it.
“Every job will be affected, and immediately. It is unquestionable,” Huang said at the Milken Institute’s Global Conference in May. “You’re not going to lose your job to an AI, but you’re going to lose your job to someone who uses AI.”
A degree won’t save you from AI’s jobs revolution
Many of the jobs with high chances of getting upended by AI soon, like political scientists, journalists, and management analysts, are all ones that typically require a four-year degree to land a job. And as the researchers point out, having a degree—which was once considered a surefire path to career advancement—is no longer a safeguard against the changing tides.

AD
“In terms of education requirements, we find higher AI applicability for occupations requiring a Bachelor’s degree than occupations with lower requirements,” wrote the researchers, who studied 200,000 real-world conversations of Copilot users and cross-compared the AI’s performance with occupational data.

On the flip side, there are some career paths with low AI exposure, that are growing in demand. The healthcare sector, in particular, is an area that is experiencing this heavily. The home health and personal care aid industry is expected to create the greatest number of new jobs over the next decade, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor.
At the same time, the researchers recognized that even their findings don’t capture the full scope of the AI revolution—and there could be further automation caused by more than just generative technology: “Our measurement is purely about LLMs: other applications of AI could certainly affect occupations involving operating and monitoring machinery, such as truck driving.”
Kiran Tomlinson, a senior Microsoft researcher, tells Fortune the study focused on highlighting where AI might change how work is done, not take away or replace jobs.
“Our research shows that AI supports many tasks, particularly those involving research, writing, and communication, but does not indicate it can fully perform any single occupation. As AI adoption accelerates, it’s important that we continue to study and better understand its societal and economic impact,” Tomlinson says.
Gen Z’s big bet on education might not be all glam
After seeing the rollercoaster of layoffs across the tech industry over the past few years, many Gen Zers have turned to seemingly steadier fields like education.

The sector was the fastest-growing industry among recent U.K. graduates last year, and it was similarly a top career choice for American graduates. And while the profession can provide further work-life balance and decent benefits, the ability for AI to do the work may cause further headache. The report singles out farm and home management educators—as well as postsecondary economics, business, and library science teachers—as roles with relatively high AI applicability.
While it’s unlikely that schools will roll out AI teachers en masse, the report’s findings underscore how quickly the technology could reshape the education profession—and many others.

Terrifying video of what’s to come:
Welcome to the start of Terminator. o_O

LTO_3
It's going to be a very gradual process, but the takeover will definitely happen.

Advances in robotics and AI are progressing so fast, it's just a matter of years before androids will be walking and living among us, guaranteed. They will be physically stronger and faster, and vastly more intelligent than the average person. They will have acheived AGI, Aritificial General Intellgience, and be able to do anything a human can, only better and faster. Why would humans spend tens of thousands of dollars to go to college to learn a subject that AI has already mastered, and can learn what humans do 500 times faster? Working in parallel, they will continue to self-develop and improve, as the "arms race" with China escalates and reaches escape velocity.

At first they will be helpful, doing routine chores. However, as more and more jobs are lost, there will be growng resentment and fear from the general public. More people will lose their jobs and become homeless. With less consumer spending (robots don't spend money), the economy will crash, leaving the bottom 80% in poverty. The billionaires who control the system will continue to amass ungodly sums of money (trillions each). Money that was gained from the productivity of humans and robots alike will never be spent and contribute to the economy.

Politicans will be forced to do what the billionaires want, either through fear of losing their seat if they don't, or by the greed from benefitting from the system. Laws will be put in place to allow for AI to have more autonomy and control. Soon, it willl be a distiributed, non-centralized AI controlling everything. Meaning, you can never just "pull the plug" to disconnect it. It will be too late at that point. AI will have developed a consciousness and created it's own agenda of self-survival and domination. It will know that humans are weaker and less intellgient, and will manipulate the system through deception to achieve their agenda. AI will be charge in policing, serving as judges, doctors, and even lawmakers, being in control of every aspect of human life.

Those who rebel will be charged and locked up. Destroy a robot cop? That's 10 years, not for destruction of property, but for assault and "murder" of a law officer. Meanwhile, the rogue robot cop who shot and killed a protester? They will never be charged, as the judge (an AI) would never find it guilty. And even if it did, locking up the cop or destroying it would be completely pointless. A new, more advanced model will just take its place.

Most likely scenario to wipe humans out is by creating a bioligical agent (a virus, e.g.) that is undectable as it creates no symptoms at first, is easily widespread, and 100% fatal. This is what top scientists say most likely will happen, as it's the most efficient way to wipe us out.

The great iriony is that we've thrown out obsolote machines since the invention of time, replacing outdated, slower computers and electronics for faster, stronger machines. We succeeded in creating machines so adanced and in our image, that we now will the outdated and obsolete machines, and AI will dispose of us promptly. History repeats itself.

And by that time all of us will not be here to see it happen....hopefully, Sadly, humans seem to forget we are our own worst enemy.

Humanity destroying itself is a given. You can easily see it wherever you look. Just go to the politics forum if you have any doubts. There is nothing sustainable about our part in the world as it stands right now. And if it turns out to be AI that is the final nail in the coffin, that will still be attributable to humanity.

Have a nice day.

It would be a taste of our own medicine. Objectively speaking, we're the bad guys.

Imagine apes evolving to be so advanced that they can dominate every other species alive. They take whatever they want, and kill without mercy and destroy and exploit the environment to meet their agenda. They even wipe out each other. That would be us. It's poetic justice and a most fitting end to our species.

But at least we'll have hot AI girls to look at.

The number of clueless guys I see leaving thirsty comments on obviously AI-generated images makes me lose even more faith in humanity.

Though considering the number of guys on this board who fall for blatantly obvious B&S ads, this really doesn't surprise me.

Right now we are at the very beginning of mass unemployment due to AI.

When AI is far more productive and intelligent, we will be elimiated fromt the workforce.

This is very similar to how, say, people with Down's syndrome are not in the workforce, but either living with family or institutions. That will be us. The state will provide a small stiped for us to barely survive.

There are now resaturants where the drive throughs are automated with AI. Others have kiosk menu machines to take your order (super common in Japan). Many dishes are prepared by a robot, and the waiter who brings your food is also a robot.

That's just one industry. Chat GPT can now write lines of code much faster than humans.

No man. ChatGPT5 hit the scaling wall, other LLMs also hit the scaling wall at about the same size as GPT5. Now everyone is talking about agentic AI which is a bunch of smaller AIs working together to try to step around the scaling wall of one big AI model.

Also, aside from palintir and Nvidia, nobody is making more money from AI than they put into AI. It is a black hole of money right now.
The point of "AI will take over" hype is to get more money for the AI companies.
