Candy give away at Eaton Centre today- "Nerd Candy Clusters", they had a fun football throwing target thingy to promote the candy. , It was a sad thing to see teenage boys who do not know how to throw a football (junior sized) threw a hole about 10 ft. away, LOL, very few hits, No perfect spirals at all, wobbly, bad form, LOL. I guess they're too busy playing video games and social media on their phones.

I still remember when I was in my early teens and learned how to properly "drop kick".

I was so proud of myself... :geek:

The dude (athletic muscular black dude,) probably 30ish) who was the in charge of the football throw couldn't throw a spiral himself, lol , sorry but I gotta laugh when I see a black guy who can't throw a football.

When I was a teen after school , headed to the local playground, and played football every day.

I worked out with an Argonaut when he was recuperating from an injury. Summer of 1980, as a teenager, I was a wading pool attendant at Sunnyside pool, I just happened to have a J5V CFL football with me, I would toss it in the air to myself. One day this athletic black dude noticed me and said Hey! Toss me a few!.

His name was Keefen, never did get the last name, he ran receiving routes at full speed as I threw passes Perfect spirals) to him. I also kicked punts to him. He was impressed with my punting , perfect spirals every time. We did this for a few days, in the end he thanked me for giving him a real workout , closest I played in the CFL, LOL! I was so proud of myself! 🤓

I guess the point I'm making is that today's youth are not getting enough exercise , they'd rather be on their smart phones.
Partly true. But the cost of sports, especially travel teams, is very expensive these days.
Might not be that's kids aren't interested, might be more to do what the parents can afford.

I'm not necessarily talking about organized sport, just that they should be playing pick up sports regularly for health reasons.
High schoolers should have an hour of gym class every day of the week . IMO.

That may be the difference between the "old days" and now.

When I was under 20, way back in the 1950's and 60's in Winnipeg, pick-up games were the norm. Really talented guys got more serious with organized and league sports, as well as high school and University teams.

But for regular less talented guys like me, pick-up games were the way to go, whether it was outdoor hockey almost every winter evening at various city community clubs with no defined teams, no "checking", and no "lifters", or "work your way up" baseball games at large enough empty school playgrounds almost every summer evening after hours.

Even football games were played as "touch" games without helmets or other protective equipment, although for those we would choose teams at the start of each game.

All with no coaches, refs, umpires, or parental audiences.

Nowadays it seems that kids are either involved in scheduled and organized team sports with coaches, etc., sometimes with league play, or they don't bother at all... :(

You don't think that is a problem? Not the laughing at useless kids, but male kids that have zero athletic ability. There have always been boys that don't play sports, but usually they don't volunteer to throw a football in public if they don't know how to. This is a new thing.
I don't think some kids not knowing how to throw a football is a problem - no. I don't think it is a problem that some kids who can't throw took a chance on a game in public. Why is that a "problem"? It just doesn't register as a thing to call a "problem". Maybe another word.... but certainly the word problem itself doesn't seem to work. Maybe we just live with different problems in our life and so we have a difference of opinion on what constitutes a "problem"

I also don't think some random game offered to a small population of people is reflective of the actual athletic workings in society as a whole. I think he saw a few kids not knowing and decided to lump all teens together and have a laugh about it. Seems there are a lot of older people are either laughing or cussing the younger generation.

And maybe they'll be able to program a website in a day, or play whatever other sport like a champ, what matters truly is exercising, eating healthy, not doing a sport, and especially not the sport you were oh so used to in the good old days, maybe times changed?
It's not such a big deal, you saw some people trying to have fun, they failed and laughed it off, you didn't for some reason.

Like xmontrealer, when I was a kid, pickup games were the way to go. Even in undergrad college.

Football, baseball, road hockey, show up at the tennis courts alone and pick up games, ping pong (college), frisbee and who knows what else. We were always active doing something physical/sports related and extremely little of what I did was organized.

I wasn't very good at throwing a football, nor was I very good at most sports. I tried just about all of them except hockey; baseball, football, soccer, golf and curling but I'm not a natural athlete so didn't excel at any of them. This can be very frustrating. The one sport I had moderate success at was floor hockey, but it had limited availability.

Not all kids are built equally to be athletic.
Plus times change.
And people are interested in different things.
As long as the kid goes to the gym and keeps themselves healthy, I guess it is okay to not play sports if they are not interested in it.

The younger generation not playing sports, or in lieu of that getting together to play video games online together, or with strangers rather than doing it in real life is not good. Whether it is football, hockey, hide and go seek or tag. At least that pokemon go phase had them going outside to do it, although having hoardes of zombies walking around in packs was a bit annoying at times.
Kids living now like the first few months of the covid scare is not good.
You assume that because they can’t throw a football, that they are not playing hockey. Or go and playing hide and seek. That assumption is on you so that you can condemn the younger generation for playing video games.

People who can't throw a football accurately are often trying to throw it the wrong way. They're holding the ball in the middle, with their fingers close together.

Holding the ball about half way between the middle and one point, fingers spread apart, and finger tips just past the laces will give greater accuracy.

I advocate a straight arm release, 'Tom Brady style'

The arm angle would be higher, without shoulder pads.

It is a safe assumption, and I'm sure there is a correlation between those that can throw a football and those that can play hockey. Just the same as there is between video game addicts and not going out. A bit of video games once in a while is fine, just the same as having a cheeseburger once in a while. Some tend to over do it.
Most gamers I know are grown men. Just sayin'
