Joey was the brother of Wayne's girlfriend Vicki Moss at the time.

The message is valid but the wording isn't, but those were the times.
It's a great example of how culture evolves over time.

The word 'retard' or 'retarded' became viewed as derogatory because the term was frequently used as an insult between people with normal IQs. The term itself means the same thing is 'mentally handicapped', 'mentally challenged', 'mentally stunted', 'mentally disabled', "intellectually disabled."

I think going back before 'mentally retarded' became a popular term, people with mental disabilities were called 'feeble-minded' which arguably does have an inherent negative connotation.
The word is "presentism." The judging of people, terms and sayings of another time by the standards of today. We should be very wary of it.

There shouldn't be a rush to cancel the past, but rather educate people. Unfortunately, too many in government don't see it that way.

At one time, there was a hierarchy of terms to explain different levels of substandard intelligence:

'Dull' was used for IQ of approximately 70-85. Moron, imbecile and idiot were used for other levels of mental impairment

My personal favorite is nincompoop.

Other than moron, though, all those terms existed separately.
The whole "let's map them to different levels of intelligence" was a thing that only lasted a few decades at most, I think.

Wary, sure, but avoiding presentism can't be an excuse to suspend all critical analysis.
Critical analysis is fine. Just don't make your decisions on what someone did a hundred years ago, as if they did it today.
