Yes, and a good portion is trade they can't do without. Energy, building materials, fertilizer. They have no choice.

you do not get it

they have lots of untapped oil and gas , the have lots of lumber and potash is not the only fertilizer

and all of those items have world prices that are driven by supply and demand

they have choices

again
now pay attention
Canada's economy is 2/3 dependant on trade
the US economy is 2/3 dependant on domestic consumption

they have a huge economic advantage over Canada as they are far less dependant on trade
they can wait us out and sign trade deals with other countries at their pleasure while our economy collapses

I hope Carney offers Trump no concessions and treats this trip purely as a fact-finding mission. The international community must remain united in standing up to Trump's tactics. Any compromise by Carney could set a dangerous precedent,
you do not seem to understand a very simple fact
countries always act in their own best interest with respect to trade, always have, always will

now pay attention
China, India, Mexico are not going to walk away from a trade deal with the US in order to protect Canada or anyone else

do you honestly think that if trump offered Carney a new trade deal on acceptable terms tomorrow Carney would not jump all over it with not a second thought about other nations ?
In a heart beat
he has a responsibility to Canadians to act in their best interest ,
he does not have the responsibility or the mandate to unite with other nations to teach Trump a lesson

this is not union driven collective bargaining

the rest of your rant is ideological driven gibberish which has not been thought through properly and thus is not applicable
signaling to other nations that they, too, should appease the “Orange Thug.” The outcome Trump is likely seeking is a chain reaction of countries offering him concessions.
China appears to have adopted the most effective strategy. Refusing to engage or negotiate with someone using extortion as a tactic. Tariffs won’t hold up indefinitely. When American store shelves begin to empty and consumer prices skyrocket, the political backlash will be swift. The people backing Trump may turn on him once economic hardship hits home. The MAGAs will riot and the Proud Boys will turn into the Loud Boys when they are hurt in the pocket. Canada and other nations should prioritize diversifying their trade relationships and seek out new markets.

Do not be naive about the way of the world

If we have something the USA desperately needs and we refuse to sell it to them they will take it by force and justify their actions with a tweased argument like they did in Iraq

We will not take anything by force from the USA but that is not because we are nice guys. We would do the same to a weaker country

One country that is an exception to this universal conduct is Bhutan. They are a buddhist country who has a happiness index instead of a GNP index

Carney gave Trump a set of golf clubs as a present

I assume Carney knows Trump is a meglomaniac, extreme narcissist, sociopath, rapist, criminal, incompetent and pathological liar and is kissing up for the good of Canada

But, is this a Carney mistake?

Trump has and will turn on a dime. Trump had insulted Trudeau many times thusly insulting Canada.
He still tells lies about how we will all be rich if we become a state, how the USA subsidizes us
etc etc and is trying to tear our country apart with his takeover lies and we say nothing

Deferring to Trump is deferring to a crazy manchild and thinking it will work

The only thing Trump respects is adults with power who decry his lies

I would rather have a Carney who leads the world in the anti Trump movement by giving Trump a set of elbows up instead of a set of golf clubs

Zelenski kissing up I understand but I disrespect other countries who do it
so why should I want our PM doing it ?

Carney could have also chose to kicked Trump in the nuts right in front of all the cameras
no doubt that would have been well deserved and many would have felt immense temporary pride in our elbows up Prime Minster

then maybe just maybe Trump would has said ' OK you win the tariffs on Canada come off, just let me stop puking blood and I will sign the executive order'
"man those Canadians are tough negotiators"

however to be honest with you, i suspect the kick to the Trump Testicles or your elbows up would not work out well for Canada from an economic perspective

it is strange how so many loonie lefties allow their emotions to cloud their judgement

pretending we can wait it out vs the US is naive

your point what ever it might be is irrelevant

You do not see my point? If a powerful country desperately needs something from a weaker country they will take it by force if need be . The USA is no exception and neither are we

The USA does not have to negotiate with us if they want something they can, and will, come and
take it and the world will just watch.

Trump is threatening to take Panama and Greenland by force and the World has said nothing.

Trade, in its broadest sense, is the voluntary exchange of goods or services between individuals, businesses, or countries. It can involve exchanging goods for other goods, goods for money, or services for money or goods.

theoretically they could, but they will not go that route , and specifically not with Canada
your point is irrelevant

Trump is threatening to take Panama and Greenland by force and the World has said nothing.
Trump says a lot of things
he is an attention seeking egomaniac

the world is not a collective bargaining unit
many have said a lot in response to trumps bluster and many are freaked out by his bluster
this appears to only feed his oversized ego

one needs to separate bluster from his real objectives in order to understand him and the reality is he is not going anywhere for 4 years

It's what they have to buy, vs what they waste money on that makes the difference. They can do with out the cheap plastic dhit from China.
30% of the lumber they use is Canadian. They need all of it. They need all the petroleum because they have to get it to various markets. If they only use their own for domestic then they have no exports. Not just gas but about 300 billion in petroleum products they produce.
They don't have cheap electricity. We have it from hydro dams in excess and sell at a discount. And many of the border town now directly have contracts for Canadian energy. Millions of homes and businesses, as well as public services.
They need our products FOR THE Domestic CONSUPTION you keep going on about. They need the raw materials and energy to make that shit.
We are that integrated. So yes we can wait it out.

The United States has roughly 818.8 million acres of forested land, representing about 36.21% of its total land area. This includes both forest land and woodlands, which together make up over one-third of the country.

They have a very strong softwood lumber lobby who would jump all over the chance to capture a 3% market share
inflationary, sure, but Trump is not fazed by that

wrong again
Trump is given the green light to eliminating the regulatory burden and "drill baby drill

Hundred articles like the one above. It's not profitable to drill. So they won't do it.

Above about Softwood. They don't have near the capacity to produce it. Nor will they. Various bottlenecks occur, from experienced labor to equipment

Basically you are thinking they can flip a switch. They can't. And more importantly private business WON'T. Because they have no idea if these tariffs and deals will be here in four years. That is where your entire hypothesis fails.

Quite simply, it's AMERICAN BUSINESS that is going to wait Trump out. He is offering nothing to them to rebuild capacity. To reindustialize. So they will wait three years.

And that applies to all sectors. Sure, a few small players mat enter marketplaces. But they won't make a splash. Barely a ripple.

Panicking will accomplish nothing.

The US oil industry is expected to ramp up production, with projections indicating a potential increase of around 5% in 2025, driven by factors like increased drilling efficiency and government policies aimed at boosting output.

The US oil boom shows no signs of stopping as shale execs say they'll ramp up spending in 2025
  • According to a Dallas Fed survey, US oil company chiefs plan to increase spending in 2025.
  • 58% of shale execs said they would increase spending, and 34% said they would increase investment.
  • Firms are feeling optimistic that Trump will boost the industry, even as oil prices have sagged.

why are you so consistantly wrong

Yes, the U.S. softwood lumber industry has the capacity to expand and potentially meet a larger portion of domestic demand, especially with the right policies and trade practices. Trade barriers and increased domestic production efforts could create opportunities for the U.S. industry to grow and potentially become self-sufficient in softwood lumber supply.

the Americans will want wins in the Auto sector and / or wins over supply management with Dairy being the trade irritant that will be brought up.
Trump made a big deal about the Wisconsin Dairy Framers .

we are very unlikely to be able to protect both the Auto sector and supply management and still get a deal

one could very well be the price to save the other
there is no question which is the bigger employer

losing our share of the auto sector would be catastrophic
and any industry that is pouring is valuable product down the drain and still profitable can withstand some competition

reducing the 200+% tariff on Dairy above a certain volume will have to adjusted downward or scarped altogether
no one can look a trade partner in the eye and claim to support free trade while applying a 200+% tariff
that is just not going to survive despite all your pearl clutching

I will tell you again, Trump will not last much longer. He is under immense world pressure, even before he starts to tariff countries other than China, Canada and Mexico. If Trump is stupid enough to tariff Europe, South America and other Asian countries. He will be in a world of hurt. Imagine Trump properties trashed, Tesla cars burned and flipped over in the street. Trump and Elon will get their comeuppance if the dare to believe they are gods. Trump will reverse on his tariffs when the pressure is to great for him to bare. He will lose all credibility and ability to govern at the mid term election, if not before. Carney went to survey the situation when he met Trump. Why fight him alone when the countries of the world are forming a cabal against Trump.

President Trump announces trade deal with U.K
The trade agreement with the United Kingdom is America's first since President Donald Trump imposed sweeping tariffs on U.S. trading partners.

your cabal just got unravelled
i wonder who is next, Mexico, Japan, India ?
we shall know soon enough

You would be the last fool left standing without a deal, stupidly waiting for support from other who instead acted in their own best interests as nations always do

Before Brexit the Conservatives bragged they had "oven-ready" trade deals. After Brexit the UK signed only 1 trade deal with Japan for any leftover quotas from Japan-EU trade deal, so it is not a trade deal, just a dumpster dive for sloppy seconds.

UK is desperate for a trade deal, US is desperate for a trade deal.

The trade deal with the UK is not going to start an avalanche of trade deals with the US.
