Or the USSR could've not signed the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact and not invaded Poland together with Nazi Germany. A convenient fact you left out.

Lets say they didn't. If you were Stalin, knowing your army was recovering from purges, would you say it was a better idea to sign the pact and take half of Poland as a buffer zone, or be hostile to Germany and have them right on your border? Also there was a very real possibility that the Germans could convince the Poles to fight with them and attack Russia as there have been many wars fought between Russia and Poland.
