At a high level, with some you pay the appointment rate at the reception and the room rate is paid to the MA. In some there is no receptionist so obviously you pay the hostess the entire amount in the room. At others you pay both the appointment rate and the room rate to the receptionist.

Any consideration beyond that is between consenting adults.

It varies not only from spa to spa but some spas have different set ups by location (i.e. not all have receptionists).

Generally yes, the rate is a surprise and most attendants will have different rates. In my experience, the vast majority will charge in the same ballpark (usually 120-150hh and 180-240h for the standard session, including door fee), it's pretty rare for someone to charge more than this.

Rates are always discussed before the session. Usually the entire lump sum is given to the attendant. Other places (such as angels touch/paradise spa) will have a receptionist collect the door fee, and the attendant collects the rest. Additionally, some spas like Club Alpha have a flat rate for all attendants.

All spas I’ve been to in Ottawa, which I’ve been to most, it’s the same flat rate for basic sessions.
