What a completely biased interview. Just appalling.
Are you shocked? Lilley is a die-hard neocon. The Liberals could cure cancer and he'd find a way to paint them in a negative light. Fun side fact: Lilley considered himself to be a devote Catholic...but left his wife for Doug Ford's press secretary...and he seems to always have positive takes on Ford...

Anyways, the F-35 is the superior aircraft. It can fill all of Canada's air needs, from fighter to escort. It can do mid-air refueling and so on and so forth. The Saab jet is great, but doesn't really do all that the F-35 can. But, as @Butler1000 points out, Trump is blabbering about a "kill switch," which makes the F-35 seem like a possible Trojan Horse....Thought, to be frank, I doubt that could happen.

Here is the dirty little secret (well, it isn't really a secret), Canadian governments since Mulroney have fucked up procurement. Like replacing the aging Sea King Helicopter fleet. It took an insane amount of time to sign the deal. I'm honestly not sure what the best decision is for Canada, but I understand why looking at the Saab jet again could make sense now...

Canada should consider who it will be partnering with in NATO and NORAD when it selects its next fighter.

Countries flying the F35: Australia, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Israel, Italy, Japan, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, South Korea, Singapore, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, and Greece.

Countries flying the Gripen: Sweden, Hungary, Czech Republic, South Africa, Brazil, Thailand. Colombia (pending), Ukraine (pending)

You should consider the IKEA fighter cannot survive a modern adversary, you either own them and can’t use them in a conflict or use them and sacrifice your pilots.

Pick your peer country.

it should also be noted you will own 16 F35s, if you go IKEA you’ll have two systems to maintain. Also, 3,000 Canadians work for suppliers to the F35.

But there would be no kill switch.

Besides, jets are old school.
Its better to spend that money on drones and missiles.

I believe the F-35 is the superior plane and Trump and his circus will eventually be flushed down the toilet.

Lilley belongs in Marolago, just saying.

The F35 is not a "defeat all" plane.
There are specific missions for which it is used.
Plus it is extremely expensive to buy and operate and may not be a good use of money for our needs.

Not true. The kill switch is centred around the daily software updates the F35 requires. No one is calling it a bad fighter in fact it’s elite! Just overly expensive, costly to fly, and many of those countries currently flying in the F 35 have expressed concerns over US control control of software and systems and maintenance that has been threatened with pullback by the current president. Interesting that the pilot in the video, whose abilities I don’t doubt, was recently employed by Lockheed Martin. He calls the technology in the “IKEA” fighter as being over 50 years old. Bullshit the fighter has been updated many many times with new design, technology, engines, weapon systems, radars and last, but not least AI technology that appeared to fool, even the F 35 in recent NATO war games. It actually scored a kill on the F35.
In Melanie Jolie‘s interview, a couple of days back never was it stated that the F 35 is not a worthy aircraft. Her main concern was clearly Lockheed Martin not delivering enough jobs in consideration of Canada‘s participation and purchase of its aircraft. That’s a major concern in Canada right now Thank you, Mr. President! Furthermore, I agree that operating a mixed fleet would not be ideal, but thousands of additional manufacturing life jobs sure would put a lot of food on the Canadian tables. Too many factors to consider here. Frankly, in my opinion, the message in this video is biased and just appalling.
And I agree that drones will be the way of the future, primarily in concert with new 6th generation aircraft ideally.

We really should purchase the SAAB AWACS planes, cancel the Boeing maritime planes. The SAAB fighter is part of a fighting system and that includes powerful ground based or AWACs planes so the fighters can shut of their sensors while the much more powerful AWACS and ground based radar vector their missiles to the target. The SAAB surveillance system covers land sea and air.

Trump and Hokey Pokey are saying no deal unless we buy F-35, we should say give us a deal and drop tariffs or FUCK YOUUUUUUUUUUU (in a more diplomatic way) Also we should put the digital tax back as Trump broke of talks which he promised when we suspended it.

‘you’ll own 16 of them at a minimum, and have 3,000 Canadians building components for it.

One more consideration, The F35, B21 and F47 (NGAD) will all work with CCA (Collaborative Combat Aircraft) which is a drone wing man. This will dramatically reduce the cost per airframe and reduce exposure to manned aircraft. The USAF is testing multiple candidates now, planning on initial purchase of 1000 air frames.

We should just buy the Gripen, and then start a program to build a 6th Gen Fighter, from the ground up.
It will take 2 decades.
But if we don't start now, and invest now we will always be buying and be dependent on the US.

There is NO WAY manned jets can beat a drone. They tested F-16s flown by AI against the very best fighter pilots. All 3 AI programs beat the very best pilots from the USAF EVERY TIME. And if you build a plane that does not have to carry a man and can pull 20 Gs, its even WORSE for manned planes.

Sure, but you can fire a bunch of drones for 1/1000th the cost and keep a jet too busy to take them all down.
