This is crazy. Apparently it's not being taken too seriously.

While I generally agree with that perspective it would be hard to imagine a scenario where the use of force was required on a lawyer who has access to the facilities in a professional capacity. She was charged with trespassing being in the interview room. Need both sides of the stories.
It's a huge deal and it's now been farmed out to the YR police to do a 3rd party investigation. This is crazy. Apparently it's not being taken too seriously.
Unless she wanted them to assault her to add to the anti-police narrative which seems to be rampant among the alphabet types. I can easily picture a scenario where she gets all high and mighty and aggressive and tries to push her way past the police. Sure the beating was probably not necessary (and im sure it is being over stated by the media) but we don't know what happened. The DRPS has allowed YRP to investigate, so it seems they have nothing to hide. Here's hoping the cops are exonerated and this lawyer turns out to be some radical cunt. While I generally agree with that perspective it would be hard to imagine a scenario where the use of force was required on a lawyer who has access to the facilities in a professional capacity.![]()

I agree-there must have been a heated interaction or assault between them in order for her to be cuffed.Unless she wanted them to assault her to add to the anti-police narrative which seems to be rampant among the alphabet types. If cops come across a person in a room doing paperwork what reason would they have to think something nefarious is taking place?I have a feeling we are never going the get the fully story. The lawyer was working alone, maybe for a long time, after her session with a client (someone charged and locked up). Maybe there was a shift change in the meantime during the lawyer/client interview. Then two cops handling court security found this woman alone, where they never find people alone. To them it smelled off. She got belligerent when they asked her to account for herself, since she probably dislikes cops to begin with, and is pleased with her status as a young criminal lawyer.
It never should have gone further than a little verbal jousting, in my view. But who knows? If they are rogue cops, or anti-black cops, I'm all for penalties against them. But my guess is the story is much greyer.
York cops are like an effin crime syndicate. When they raided the Chinese mansion/gambling den, all kinda luxury items went missing and they had to drop the charges because of it. Nothing was recovered, and no one punished for robbing on the job. Totally Haitian policing standards. That force should be folded and put under OPP while they rebuild.

In today's Toronto Star, it is explained that these courts close precisely at 5pm. In practice, however, apparently lawyers often ignore the rules and work late. But maybe these two cops didn't know that, as newbies. And/or tensions are high, given inmate escapes, political terrorism, etc. Or they are just right-wing assholes. Anyway, they charged this woman with criminal trespass, and roughed her up in the arrest. My guess is that she put up a fight over the perceived outrage. And now it's quite a political football. If cops come across a person in a room doing paperwork what reason would they have to think something nefarious is taking place?
From what I've since read it is a totally normal thing in the courthouse and it's not only lawyers staying late, sometimes bail court goes beyond 5pm and other times juries sit past 5pm trying to come to a verdict. One lawyer said that in 23 years he'd never heard of anyone being made to leave the courthouse due to the 5pm deadline. Apparently last Friday a swarm of female lawyers staged a sit in past the 5pm mark to show support and defiance of the situation. Regardless of the details we don't know I find it hard to see this working out in favor of the police. Unless they have footage of her becoming aggressive with them there is really no other defense they can use for treating her like that. Looking forward to seeing how this all plays out...In today's Toronto Star, it is explained that these courts close precisely at 5pm. Holy shit. For once I agree with you on something. Do I need to get my eyes checked? Do you think boobs are awesome? Cause that could be 2 thingsHoly shit. For once I agree with you on something. Do I need to get my eyes checked? Never thought I’d see the day
Roughing up a lawyer, clerk, judge, or any other court-affiliated person is absolutely retarded. Especially in the courthouse.
You would think there would be cameras set up covering that area...But maybe I'm mistaken.. Unless they have footage of her becoming aggressive with them there is really no other defense they can use for treating her like that. Looking forward to seeing how this all plays out...
