I was having a hard time following Carney's position the last 72 hours as well.

Judging from the reactions of just Canadians here on TERB, there's something for everyone. Take your pick.
It's pretty simple.

While the USA is making enemies and blowing their wad, he is making trade deals to bypass the USA in a shit ton of sectors. So his paying lip service to the fake Old World Order while he continues to set up Canada in the new world order is a good idea. He has committed nothing, and really, other than maybe some post war peacekeeping we don't have much to contribute at this point.

Trump is nicely distracted. And within about 4 weeks we will know the outcome of this war I think. Of it goes south he will have far too much on his plate and will, just like last time, probably accept minimal changes to CUSMA to get it off his plate.

except US isnt' bombing cities...they're bombing specific targets...guess who's bombing civilians? IRGC
They are bombing Tehran, a huge city filled with civilians, and killing little girls. Casualties are estimated over 1000 already, and carpet bombing on the way.

you keep mentioning "little girls" if you're talking about the school of little girls...so far it's unsubstantiated. also the location is inside the IRGC compound. and there are already reports nobody knows there was a school there. Again, be honest...these reports you are mentioning, who are the sources.

Omfg.....

Iran is Persia, and has thousands of years of history. Maybe its birders are more recent as the Brits redrew things to their liking but the culture is OLD. As is its own pride, patriotism, and sense of community. Far more than any other gulf state.

I have dumped nothing. Nothing has in fact changed in Venezuela for its people. They are just paying the Trump protection racket now.

Iraq is fractured, so is Syria, Libya is a nightmare. And the USA is already trying to push the Kurds to get in it. Although from what I've seen they aren't falling for it this time. The USA is sending in B-52's. That means carpet bombing of urban areas. Destruction of all infrastructure.

What the fuck do you think happens then? Back to normal?
Why the fuck should we suddenly believe, with the history we have, that suddenly THIS TIME will be different.

And how you can continue to support the USA being Israel's BITCH in this, as told by the Secretary of State himself, and call yourself a moderate American, is just beyond me.

You go to the Scott Jennings school of political thought?
You seem to be upset.
Are joining the anti-Israel crowd? That's a fair position if that's truly your sincere viewpoint. However, you wouldn't be the first person on social media to start swinging in all directions.

I'm not quite sure why you thought the Iranian regime could continue to threaten the region. It's almost like we're forgetting all the violence conducted through Hamas, Hezbollah and the Houthis. The Houthis were of little threat to Israel, but rather another Iranian effort to destabilize the Gulf region.

Lastly, I thought you were a big fan of Carney. Does your support only extend as far as he conducts himself in adherence to your views?

Carney:
"Canada supports the United States acting to prevent Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon and to prevent its regime from further threatening international peace and security."

OH OH! If Trump's war doesn't wrap up soon and gas comes back down, he's done like dinner at Salty's house!
This war could mean existential crisis for many.
80% of the food to the Gulf, >60% of oil to Asia, 20% of world's oil, water issues, energy - all at risk.
And the market will respond and inflation shoot up.
I wouldn't be surprised if Europe, China, Russia enter the war at some point maybe even with boots on the ground.
This is going to devastate economies, including us.
Maybe why Carney was vague about Canadian participation.
Sounds like WW3 to me.

Its simple.
Carney doesn't gain anything politically by condemning the US and Israel for this illegal war (which would have been morally right to do).
On the one hand we have a significant Iranian diaspora (~1%) who support regime change in Iran.
On the other hand, Trump and Carney were already at loggerheads after Davos.
So condemning the US gains Canada nothing at this point.
So he paid lip service, saying he "supports it with regret" and was vague on Canadian participation in the future.
Which is probably the right way to play it.
Meanwhile he signed a pretty significant trade deal with India and has taken steps to normalize relations in the last week in his efforts to steer Canada away from reliance on the US.

Except that it makes his Davos speech look like posturing.
When even the Globe is against it.....
