I'm not sure if the lounge is the place to post this but thought the basic component National Pride Dilemma is at the heart of it rather than the sport itself.

The setup: My heritage is a mix of Scottish, Irish and French backgrounds but am probably 5th generation Canadian. Basically I don't have any know relatives back in those countries and so Canada is my nation and my pride lays here. And I've heard from some FIFA fans years ago that Canada has no real identity due to its diverse heritages here.

Because of the way Canada is built with immigration at the core there is whole communities within that call Canada home. Every world cup that comes along these communities come alive with excitement (national pride) Little Italy (not this year though) Portugal and Croatia for example in the game tonight and have pretty big communities here in Toronto.

In this World Cup team Canada has sparked some pride. With that extra time goal on Sunday has captured some imagination making it to the knockout stage. I love underdog stories and Canada it looks like is second to the incredible story of Cape Verde but my question is If your home country is or was still in the hunt for the World cup title and team Canada were to face your home country in the final which team would you be cheering for?

For Americans .. substitute US in the same question.

As a lifelong soccer fan who cheered for Ireland and Netherlands (in that order), now that Canada has a world class team they are my #1. So really the only team I have left in this competition. If they lose then I'd likely cheer for the winner of Mexico and England. But I wouldn't be sad to see either Brazil or Argentina win. As long as its not France.

I can imagine if I moved to another country. I would have a preference for Canada. And if I stayed there and established roots my descendants would gradually be rooting for the new country.

Oh and I like underdogs and Cape Verde has caught my attention. But if Canada can get past Morocco on Saturday WOW

I did one of those DNA samples, and I am mostly English with lesser amounts of Scottish, Irish, German, French and Dutch with a touch of Italian. So I'm generally pretty covered with finding someone to cheer for when these events come along. I will still always pick Canada over any of them though if that is an option.

I am cheering for the underdog countries. Mainly teams that have the most darkest players on the team as a % (percentage). So if there are 20 players and they have 12-16 players that are darker than caramel I will root for them.

Then Canada is my team. I love to see Jamaica win.

Call me Mr. Worldwide because I can and do cheer for multiple teams.

In descending order:
- Canada because I’m born and raised here. It’s nice to feel some national pride in something proactive rather than reactive (elbows up)

- Mexico and Spain because I have some Spanish connections, love latinas, and Mexican fans are a riot

- Norway. They’re the “underdog” of the big dogs. If that makes any sense. I’m a dork who likes their viking aesthetic and the big rows they do with fans. Haaland is a fun goofball to root for.

- formerly Japan because I’m a weeb

- whoever plays against the US because fuck em 🤣 (elbows up lmao)

I was born in Ghana but have lived in Canada for more years of my life. I recently had major surgery and was not charged a dime out of pocket for all the excellent services I received, including tests, medications and after care. In Ghana, you pay or die and many cannot afford and therefore perish.

The corruption in Ghana is blatant. Most of the wealthy are either politicians or those connected to them. Truly disgusting spectacle.

So while I cheer for the Ghanaian team because of my love for the people, I will support Canada if it played against Ghana. No hesitation.

I was born in Canada. My parents are Italian immigrants. I would cheer on Canada over Italian and Italian over all others.

I think it is reasonable for anyone to cheer on one's birth place over all others. It is one's homeland. But born here means root for here IMHO.

Have Croats friends similar to me; however they would root for Croatia over Canada. Poor form.

Haaland and Nyland were phenomenal. That saved penalty and second Haaland goal!!! Wow!

Vikings vs the British will be a very historically fitting fight during the quarter finals.

Best way to do it is to root for the team you want to win and when they're eventually eliminated you simply root against the teams you want to lose. Easy peasy.

You can cheer for Scotland, Ireland, France, and Canada. Go to Fanfest wearing the soccer jerseys of those countries. That's the beauty of the World Cup. I'm born in Canada, so I cheer for Canada.

Why do I get the feeling that Round 16 games are fixed or setup. 2026 07 07 games looked to fixed.

Ah man .. such close games and cause I'm not a world cup fan expert I can't say just like hockey a fortunate bounce can decide a game.
Officiating has also been a popular thing to blame a loss in but from what I seen video review seems to make it more fair.

But there was one review I was confused on, but again to be fair I don't know the rules like I do for hockey (even in hockey though there are obscure rules that we wouldn't have known)

The incident was in England vs Mexico and Mexico was awarded a penalty kick. At full speed it looked like the England player kicked with force to the back of the Mexican players leg up in the air as both were going for the ball.
In slow mo the England player was already in motion of kicking at the ball and I saw that the Mexican player didn't go for the ball but flung his leg out to block the England players leg from reaching the ball. No intent by in England player and the Mexican player sacrificed his leg to keep the ball from being cleared or worse to draw a penalty.

Just my observation.
