'I don't hit my kids,' mother says

That is why she needs to call the police for a 12 year old shithead.

I don't care what someone says to you - not allowed to hit them. Take this to the extreme - can the cop shoot the kid for mouthing off?

Hitting is a lot different from spanking. I never hit my kids however I did spank them (rarely) and I think it hurt me more than them. I may be no expert on raising kids but I can say that a little fear goes along way with kids. Teaching respect to kids sometimes means demonstrating consequences . The kids today seem to think there are no consequences for their actions so they have no respect for authority. Perhaps we should take some of the values we had growing up in the past and apply to today

I sure grew up in a different world.. my dad thought nothing of bring the strap out.. I didn't dare nor do I today talk to people like that.. What my dad did would today be called abuse, I don't, I call it "the way it was" and my generation has farrrrrrrrrr more respect.

The LE officer or peace officer clearly assaulted the minor, with the evidence recorded and now video viral. The courts would decide likely that assault would be the criminal conviction making it likely that the officer should be dismissed. The fact that the minor used profanity doesn't mitigate the apparent criminal conduct of the officer who ought to have known better and was not trained to criminally assault victims in the line of duty. Verbal abusing a police officer is not a crime that a minor could be convicted of. The video and social media environment has curtailed a lot of police brutality and cops now behave differently when they know that they just might be being recorded in the line of duty. Probably this cop would have acted differently if he knew that he was being recorded. "Old fashion discipline " which is highly subjective is not the way to go in today's society which is sometimes unfortunate.

There’s a difference between fear and respect.

The majority of people believe the kid deserves a smack across the mouth. The reality is that the cop is in deep trouble for smacking the kid. If the kid is like this at 12 years old He will probably be like this all his life. The kid also has a broken hand, I wonder if someone has taken a baseball bat to him already? All I can say is that if he lands up in prison he will not just get a smack in the mouth.

I don't think anyone denies the kid deserves a smack. Someone in public says that to someone else and they are liable to get a beat down. Difference is obviously the assault is coming from a cop who is trained to use his/her judgement when using force.

Now, that said, there are other ways to punish that do not involve hitting. Yes I was hit as a kid but there was also various forms of punishment - no tv, go to room, isolation, humiliation (kneel straight up on a hard floor). None of these are violent and all can be very effective. Your child gives you lip, confiscate their phone for a while, they'll learn the lesson pretty quick. Clearly the kid in this video has not been punished enough to think he can get away with what he's saying.
