Store guy tries to sell me a DVD player that has "1080p upconverting". Said that it will "upconvert" normal DVD to high definition. Is this true?

Maybe it will do some formatting to make it a bit better looking on an HD display.

But remember the issue is the source video. The source is standard D1. You can't just go up to legit HD quality when your source isn't. Sounds like mis-info to me.

Yes, technically it will be outputted to HD signal, however your input source is still 480P EDTV. It will make almost no difference. In fact on some earlier models the processing degraded the image a little bit. However, the HDMI output on up-converting players is really handy as it gives you loss less pure digital connection. so I say go for it just for that, of course if your TV supports it.

In short, don't expect BlueRay quality from a regular player, up-converting or not.

I think if/when I need a new DVD player I would drop the $250 to go Blu-Ray. But there doesn't appear to be a rush out there; and I'm in no hurry at that price.

Is price too high for the quality considering how few movies you rent vs. sports and general broadcast quality?

IME, an upconverted DVD will play at 1080i (good)

Blu-ray will play at 1080p (better)

Wrong, new up-converting DVDs play at 1080P but that makes no difference as you are still up-converting a 480P signal.

A BluRay plays at 1080P from a 1080P source material, that's why it looks better.
