In Flanders Fields

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

Here are some famous words from WW II:

"I shall return."

"Turn on the lights."

"NUTS"

Bless them all.

Lest we forget all the young people who were deceived into killing and dying for money.

Visited the Canadian Cemetery at Juno a few years ago. It is simply one of the most serene, beautiful places I have ever seen. Many people left poppies and Canadian coins and small Canadian flags at the entrance to the cemetery. In comparison the American cemetery was almost Hollywood. If you visit France take the time to visit the landing sites at Normandy. GB

High Flight

John Gillespie Magee, Jr
Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of earth,
And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;
Sunward I've climbed, and joined the tumbling mirth
Of sun-split clouds, --and done a hundred things
You have not dreamed of --Wheeled and soared and swung
High in the sunlit silence. Hov'ring there
I've chased the shouting wind along, and flung
My eager craft through footless halls of air...
Up, up the long, delirious, burning blue
I've topped the wind-swept heights with easy grace
Where never lark or even eagle flew --
And, while with silent lifting mind I've trod
The high untrespassed sanctity of space,
Put out my hand, and touched the face of God.

Just one of many heroic acts from the front line in WW II. Admiral Mitscher broke policy and ordered his men to "Turn on the Lights".
At least once before I've been able to find the quote from the official history which after discussing how Vice-Admiral Mitscher could hear the aircraft overhead and the pilots becoming increasingly desperate about their fuel situation goes on something like: Mitscher turned to his chief of staff and quietly said" turn on the lights" and not just the dim landing and truck lights came on but the running lights and even search lights shining up into the night. The Yorktown took on aircraft for an hour before she recovered one of her own.

I've had to cancel my trip to Washington.

I wanted to attend this year's Veterans Day Ceremonies with my American cousin. I was informed by one of my local cousins that he gets upset when he attends, seeing the names of his buddies on the Vietnam Memorial is too much for him.
