Yes, the reason is called evolution, biochemistry........Why do you think we've developed the way we have? Adaptation. But to say that because there may or may not be THC recepticles in our brains that smoking pot is a good thing is quite the stretch. But I don't know very many potheads that truly reshaped things, other than music and art, but certainly not industry, technology and the things that make our lives more convenient.
Wether good or bad, the fact that our bodies are naturally adapted to receiving THC (either for its use or to remove it from the system) it goes a long way in deferentiating marijuana from cocaine. The public still blindly accepts the poor information they were fed years ago regarding marijuana and that stigma today hinders real research into the good or bad effects of marjiuana. Part of the disinformation is that weed has been classified with hard drugs (which our bodies apparently do not have a natural adaption nor way of handling). I agree with you that it should be controlled in a similar way that Alcohol is. Another aspect of the disinformation is everyone's generalization of "potheads", you say you don't know any "potheads" that add in value in industry, technology, etc . The question is, how many of those that are reshaping the things you mention do actually partake in weed smoking and you just don't know it because its a subculture not accepted in the eyes of society and therefore everyone keeps to themselves about it, the "potheads" that you speak about are the more outspoken of the group, but thats a side of their personality seperate from the weed. In the Technological industry that I've been in (computers, databases, etc) I've come across quite few who smoke, including managers (especially for stress relief). Even myself, I'm a highly influential person in my line of work, I work with multi-million dollar deals, and I enjoy a good toke. My own experience is slightly different than your own because I hold no biases towards anyone who smokes, and therefore know more people (from every walk of life, teachers, doctors, deadbeats, strippers even a priest) who partake in the substance. The disinformation continues because most people don't see the regular pot smoker's daily life, its not a huge party with lots of drugs, its no different than someone cracking open a beer at the end of a hard day.

But I think to make an extension that pot is good for you, that it makes you think clearer, and that you solve problems better under the influence is nonsense. It's a mind altering drug! That means it alters the mind, making rational thought usually less possible.
I note the changes in my body (some good, some bad), and its hardly nonsense. Everything you eat and drink becomes a chemical that affects your body in some way, break it down, everything is the same. Everything alters your mind, if you don't get enough of certain chemicals from vegetables you'll become irritable and edgy, if you don't get enough sunlight (UV) you can become depressed. In some cases, marijuana can help eliminate some of the factors of other drugs on our bodies. To assume that mind alteration is always a bad thing is to ignore the fact that everything effects your brain (even that hamburger you ate).
To generalize everyone who smokes pot under a classification of "potheads" is like classifying all who drink alcohol as alcoholics. Its all in moderation and control.

I say, enjoy your pot by staying home sitting on your couch and solve your own problems. If you leave the house.........take a cab, or walk!
Well not quite, I enjoy my pot and I solve your problems, although you don't realize it, based on the Industry I'm in. If I leave the house.... I tell my limo driver where to take me.
