October 1 - The Unforgettable Fire is released world-wide
Oct/Nov - The Live Aid "Do They Know It's Christmas?" benefit single is released to help fight famine in Africa. Bono and Adam Clayton join Bob Geldof and other stars. Unfortunately Geldof would waste most of the cash from the single and Live Aid concerts in one of the biggest charity debacles of all time.
December 1 - U2 begin the American leg of The Unforgettable Fire tour
December 20 - Rolling Stone's Top 100 Albums of 1984 survey: Under a Blood Red Sky ranks 48th, War is 56th, and The Unforgettable Fire comes in as 68th
(March) Rolling Stone magazine called U2 the "Band of the 80s", saying that "for a growing number of rock-and-roll fans, U2 has become the band that matters most, maybe even the only band that matters."

February - Bono and the Edge team up with Christy Moore to record "North and South of the River" in Dublin's Windmill Lane Studios
June 1 - U2 release "Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me, Kill Me", a track that features in the Batman Forever soundtrack. It goes to No.2 in the UK, No.16 in America, and No.1 in Australia and Ireland
September 12 - Bono, The Edge, and Brian Eno premier "Miss Sarajevo" at the annual Pavarotti and Friends concert in Modena, Italy
November 6 - Passengers' Original Soundtrack 1 is released world-wide. Tina Turner releases "Goldeneye", written by Bono and the Edge

1997
March 4 - Pop is released. Critics complain that the album doesn’t sound like U2
PopMart was the second highest grossing tour in the U.S. at $79.9 million with 46 shows in 37 cities. Despite this, the tour is too expensive, and almost bankrupts the band. Bono wrecks his voice from smoking.
September - U2 fulfills a promise by playing a live concert in Sarajevo. When meeting with Bosnian president Alija Izetbegovic, Bono tells him that the band's message "is banal, a simple one: that music is beyond politics."
December - Bono joins Pavarotti to open a cultural centre in Mostar, Bosnia- Herzegovina. The idea is to use music and therapy to heal children's wounds of war, and to enable Bosnian artists to pursue their work. Critics nail Bono and Luciano for spending big charitable dollars on non-essential facilities.
Right about the same time as Bono's journey to Bosnia, U2 release their newest single "If God Will Send Her Angels."

April 26 - U2 make an appearance in the 200th episode of The Simpsons
October 19 - "Sweetest Thing" singles are releasedNovember 2 - The Best of 1980-1990 B-Sides is released
November 9 - Best of 1980-1990 is released
November - Bono performs on a version of Lou Reed's "A Perfect Day" with 27 other artists, which is released by the BBC as a fundraiser for their "Children In Need" charity. As it turns out the song was not recorded as a charity song, but rather for an information film by the BBC to celebrate the diversity of music.
