I bet Bill never imagined back in the mid 80's he'd be on the cover of Time with the lead singer of U2. Which was just beginning to get huge. Same goes for Melinda.

I really feel Bill Gates actually wants to help and that is his primary motivation. Say what you want about Microsoft being a monopoly and Windows being crappy but that guy has given more to charitable causes than anyone and does it somewhat quietly.

Now Bono on the other hand... I think he does want to help but he also loves being in the spotlight and loves being adored as a champion and spokesperson of the poor. I'm not saying Gates doesn't get some enjoyment the press that he gets on his generosity... but there is no question Bono thrives on it.

Bono is an annoying little twit who loves the lime light check out the following link and study the time line, it goes album release, charity work, concert tour, charity work

http://www.edthesock.com/News/article/sid=89.html

some examples as follows:

1984
October 1 - The Unforgettable Fire is released world-wide
Oct/Nov - The Live Aid "Do They Know It's Christmas?" benefit single is released to help fight famine in Africa. Bono and Adam Clayton join Bob Geldof and other stars. Unfortunately Geldof would waste most of the cash from the single and Live Aid concerts in one of the biggest charity debacles of all time.
December 1 - U2 begin the American leg of The Unforgettable Fire tour
December 20 - Rolling Stone's Top 100 Albums of 1984 survey: Under a Blood Red Sky ranks 48th, War is 56th, and The Unforgettable Fire comes in as 68th
(March) Rolling Stone magazine called U2 the "Band of the 80s", saying that "for a growing number of rock-and-roll fans, U2 has become the band that matters most, maybe even the only band that matters."

1995
February - Bono and the Edge team up with Christy Moore to record "North and South of the River" in Dublin's Windmill Lane Studios
June 1 - U2 release "Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me, Kill Me", a track that features in the Batman Forever soundtrack. It goes to No.2 in the UK, No.16 in America, and No.1 in Australia and Ireland
September 12 - Bono, The Edge, and Brian Eno premier "Miss Sarajevo" at the annual Pavarotti and Friends concert in Modena, Italy
November 6 - Passengers' Original Soundtrack 1 is released world-wide. Tina Turner releases "Goldeneye", written by Bono and the Edge
Bono spends New Years in Sarajevo. Promises to come back with the band.

1997
March 4 - Pop is released. Critics complain that the album doesn’t sound like U2
PopMart was the second highest grossing tour in the U.S. at $79.9 million with 46 shows in 37 cities. Despite this, the tour is too expensive, and almost bankrupts the band. Bono wrecks his voice from smoking.
September - U2 fulfills a promise by playing a live concert in Sarajevo. When meeting with Bosnian president Alija Izetbegovic, Bono tells him that the band's message "is banal, a simple one: that music is beyond politics."
December - Bono joins Pavarotti to open a cultural centre in Mostar, Bosnia- Herzegovina. The idea is to use music and therapy to heal children's wounds of war, and to enable Bosnian artists to pursue their work. Critics nail Bono and Luciano for spending big charitable dollars on non-essential facilities.
Right about the same time as Bono's journey to Bosnia, U2 release their newest single "If God Will Send Her Angels."

1998
April 26 - U2 make an appearance in the 200th episode of The Simpsons
October 19 - "Sweetest Thing" singles are releasedNovember 2 - The Best of 1980-1990 B-Sides is released
November 9 - Best of 1980-1990 is released
November - Bono performs on a version of Lou Reed's "A Perfect Day" with 27 other artists, which is released by the BBC as a fundraiser for their "Children In Need" charity. As it turns out the song was not recorded as a charity song, but rather for an information film by the BBC to celebrate the diversity of music.

Bono.....please go away! Just worry about your music, instead of trying to be a politician!

I'm sick of his wining about Canada not increasing their share to other nations. How much of his tour/album sales revenue does he contribute?

I'm continually amazed that the general public, encouraged by the media , listens to actors/actresses/singers/fashion designers on subjects of economics or medicine. Is there any group that is less qualified to comment?

Raising awareness is admirable but Bono crossed the line a long time ago. I think he may actually be a detriment to worthy causes now because people's eyes just begin to glaze over when he speaks .

Why don't we have a poll to see how many of us want Bono to go away.

He's a musician, not a politician...

He doesn't have to worry about his music. It's usually bang on! What other band has a 25 year track record of music that rocks and continously attracts young people.

Go to any Stones, Springsteen, Eagles, etc... concert and all you see is the 40+ going for a night out to reminisce.

Regarding his politics, it's a free country, anybody can state their opinion. I don't mind.

Just like Paul Martin is telling the Americans to accept Kyoto, while nobody says a word about the Chinese economic powerhouse polluting like idiots.

If I was in the American's shoes I would not accept Kyoto either. Why do only the G7 nations have to look after the environment?
