Even though I am currently "between projects" I am more than happy to pay a 4% or 10% or even 100% tax hike as long as it ensures our beloved municipal employess continue to enjoy 100% job security, make at least 5 times minimum wage, 30 vacation days, 20 sick days and a gold plated pension when they retire at age 45.

Correct me IF I'm wrong, rockslinger... but I'm sensing a certain disdain over the current employment status and remuneration packages of our wonderful (un)civil service...:D

Don't forget we're covering the revenues lost on the housing market down 8%
And we're also losing on the value of our houses. It seems like a reverse double dipping.

We're losing plus covering someone else's losses.

So they all make $40 an hour, and retire after 25 years service? Would love to see where you get your figures....

Try policeperson and fireperson. Actually a lot of them do their day job and have a second job on the side because the hours on their day job are so short.

Sure, those are the select few that fit into that category. But I'd rather they were the one's facing down the kid high on crack with a knife, or running into a burning building, than me.
Not a common part of their job, but can happen any time. I've got friends who are cops and firemen, some of their stories make you shake your head.
Firemen work 4 day weeks, 2 8's and 2 16's. Cops work rotating shifts.
Not a M-F 9 to 5.

Don't forget the highly skilled garbage collectors who make (on average) 2.5 times minimum wage.....

But didn't I say after the last budget that any savings the provincial or federal governments pass on will be eaten up by increases at city level???

Get ready for the announcement tomorrow. Toronto City Hall will fight the recession and declining home sales and prices by increasing property taxes by 2%-4%.

Some gov't workers are overpaid (Garbage collectors - I wouldn't half mind if they actually did their job and picked up garbage instead of leaving it at the curb for some perceived offence, others are underpaid (many Engineers, Accountants, Doctors) compared to the private sector, I can assure you.

Here is a link to all Ontario Public Servants making more than 100 k a year. Note how many cops are making big bucks. Even the cheif of police makes more than the mayor.

My friend's brother is a cop. He started on the force at age 20 and could have retired on a full pension 25 years later at age 45. Also, many of them have second jobs which may not be included in the official salary figure.

I know a fireman. He works 3 straight days of 24 hours each (he sleeps at the station). Then he is off for a week. He has so much spare time that he developed a home renovation business on the side.

Did you know that all 129,000 jobs lost in January came from the private sector?

Overpaid Police & Firemen?
Maybe, maybe not.
But if I ever need them(i.e. life threatening event like a fire) at that moment in time they will be worth every penny & then some

Cops, maybe maybe not.

If your house is burlarized, your property stolen, etc. the cops won't even bother.

Unless you get murdered, odds are, they won't do anything.

Doug Holyday said that the City's payroll has increased by 67,000 heads since amalgamation. What in blazes is the point of amalgamation then?

Does that number represent the number of employees brought in from the absorbed boroughs or are they over and above those employees?

I wouldn't doubt the increase though, didn't Miller hire a staff of his own?

100% job security
30 vacation days
20 sick days
gold plated pension

Now lets ask some questions???
job security not always but the city is growing in population and the work must go on. Now as for the vacation not everyone would get 30 days, so how long doe sit take to work up to 30 days vacation?. Now on to sick days
the public sector has learned that sick days are much cheaper then short term disability. Now as for there pension NOt many can retire at 45 OMERS
has a formula for their plan with certain exemptions for firemen and police.
