This is a letter circulating in the US:

http://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/forum/topic/734849
This is a monument donated to the U.S. like the Statue of Liberty which is located in upper NY Bay just south of the park and island where the Statue of Liberty is located. At the base is a plaque inscribed with all the victims of the WTC and inscriptions from family members. It is a monument commemorating the struggle against world wide terrorism - from the people of Russia!

The Statue of Liberty was famous before it was completed as a gift from the French People. Apparently our former administration did not want to acknowledge this more recent gift. Presentation ceremony was held Sept 11th 2006. Did anyone hear it mentioned in our media?

To be cynical and ignore this seems incompatible with the monument itself - a tear drop with a simple memorializing of the victims similar to the Vietnam War Memorial. You may want to share this not only as a moving tribute between peoples but also as a lesson in how the cynicism of politics can try to profane acts of common decency.

By far and away one of Mr. Tsereteli's better scuptures (his worst is probably his "Peter the Great" statute in Moscow). I don't believe you can say that it was ignored by the U.S. Government when Secretary Chertoff, Senator (now Governor) Corzine, and Former President Clinton all spoke at the dedication.

The statue of Liberty is really a unique case and even there the U.S. Government didn't pay for anything until long afterward (maintenance, Park Rangers etc. . .) The teardrop is in the City of Bayone because the City of Jersey City changed its mind about accepting it. I'm not sure what more you feel should have been done.

Getting the President (any U.S. President post WWII) to attend a public function such as that is a) extremely difficult - Presidents only attend really high level commemorations b) a huge headache regarding security

I lived in Short Hills New Jersey for almost 7 years, it was a beautiful place, unlike, say, Buffalo.

See, crowned heads can be useful for stuff like monuments, while the real works being done by the elected guys.

Wise elected guys know that the advice, encouragement and warning that they receive from someone who was there before they were, and will be there long after they are gone, and is not looking to steal their job is generally invaluable.

Further, most people would rather see the sovereign or the heir than yet another elected guy.
