Got a call from one of my good friends Thursday evening asking what I was up to this wknd. One of her friends invited her to a girls only long wknd trip to NYC compliments of her boss in place of someone that couldn't make it. Only problem is she's a single mom with three kids. She asked her family & a bff to watch the kids & everyone had plans. Being a family friend for 20+ years & coaching her kid in hockey she considers me pretty reliable & trustworthy. I told her I was heading to the cottage to relax & no problem i'd do it. She was excited but said have you ever had to watch three kids at the same time? How hard can it be....
Well Friday aftn I pick them up. There excited as shit to come up to the cottage for the long wknd. Oldest is a girl just turned 12 going on 16, middle is a 9 yr old boy & the babe of the family is a 5 yr old boy that just has a mischievous grin to him(looking back at my old pics I recognize that grin). Should have known I was in for a looooong wknd when on the way up we stopped for din & mischievous one spilled his plate of spaghetti on himself & 15 mins after we leave the restaurant missy screams in the car & I almost drive off the road she forgot her phone at the restaurant. Christ I thought I run over something! Turn around & back to the restaurant, what the hell did I get myself into...
My neighbours just have a shit eating grin when I show up at the cottage. Hey sb the middle one kind of looks like you, ya fuk off. So where's the mama sb? Just watching them for the wknd cut me a break. Get them settled, tell missy she's in charge of getting them ready for bed & i'm going outside for an adult pop. Half hour later missy comes out with makeup on & dressed like she's going to a club & says their in bed. Good job I say, now take off the makeup & get ready for bed yourself. Its a long wknd mom lets me stay up late & its just a little makeup. Well i'm not ur mom & at 12 I don't agree with you wearing makeup & what your dressed in. In not so many words wtf your not my mom or dad proceeded by a little hissy fit & storms off. Finish my drink & my neighbour says your gonna have your hands full this wknd. Go inside everyone's in their room so I go back out to the bonfire & my neighbours start being buddy buddy & handing me drinks & then shots like old times. I stagger into the cottage & pass out on the couch. Having a nice dream when I feel a hand pushing on my cheek, roll over & feel a hand pulling on the other cheek. The mischievous one wants breakfast, fuk its 7:00 go back to bed kid! I'll hand it to him the little fukker is persistent, but i'm hungrrry. Ya but i'm hungover & I wanna sleep pleaseeee! No luck the middle ones up now too. As i'm making breakfast I look out the kitchen window & my neighbours wife is smiling, she went in at about 11 & texts me how's your head this morning sb? I put two & two together they got me pickled cause they new the kids would get me up those bastads! Boys finish breakfast & missy's sits down for brekky. I tell her i'm not trying to be her mom or dad I just wanna see her be the fun 12yr old she is & told her she'll have the next 50yrs to wear makeup & dress like an adult. She's cool with it, gives me a hug & were buds again.
Have a little of my hangover remedy, let them meet the neighbours & gather them up to head into town for some boating supplies. Even get ribbed by the guys at the marina, ya the older boy does bear a resemblance. Come on guys that joke was so yesterday. Have a qwik drink with the guys while mischievous one climbs into every boat on display( now i'm starting to wonder about a dna test lol) So we start heading back & mischievous one says i'm hungry. So we stop at a little diner that's packed & people are already lined up outside. I give missy my debit card & tell her to wait in line with her brother & mischievous one & I will look for a table outside. We finally find a table & sit down when i get a call I have to take. Turns into a longer than usual call & mischievous one tells me he has to go pee, I give him the index finger for one min. Turn around to get out of the sun & keep talking when I see some old ladies pointing my way, so I turn around & mischievous one is peeing on the grass! Can't say anything cause i'm still on the phone, just thinking these old broads are probably thinking I'm his dad & just letting him piss on the grass! Now i'm seriously thinking about that dna test!
Long story a little shorter, it was a great couple days watching these kids be kids & having fun. From tubing & skiing,volleyball,making sand castles,teaching the boys how to throw a horseshoe & hit a baseball along with some great barbecue & bonfires with my neighbours & their kids. Couldn't have had a better long wknd & the strange thing is never even thought about getting laid. My single friends & I always joke on fathers day its a great day as long as know one calls & the doorbell doesn't ring. Sitting at the bonfire with three beautiful kids on loan for the wknd & pushing 40 i gotta admit part of me felt a little sad. Really hated to pack everything up this morning, but all good things comes to an end so one last pic of the four of us in front of the cottage & we were ready to go. My neighbour that took the pic of us thought I was a complete ahole for what happened last year but she actually gave me a hug, some words of wisdom & snacks for the kids on the way home! Dropped the kids off this aftn showed mom a pic of our faces covered in cake & she laughed her ass off.
Complete freakkin opposite from every other year but felt great to only have one hangover! Would I trade it for a long wknd partying with buddy's & scantily clad women, absolutely not. When i'm old & grey someday & these kids are all grown up I can look back at the pictures of this wknd & smile. Best long weekend ever #
