Can you guys comment. I keep hearing that AMD is not of the same quality, but it is in everything.

Is it Chinese? Is it poorer quality?

Why is AMD not liked as much as Intel?? Or is it??

Intel makes the faster chips. They also have the bigger brand to protect and are willing to spend the money to make that happen. In terms of actual quality problems, both AMD and Intel have had their issues. Intel created the CPU that couldn't do math properly (some early Pentiums).

Some people comment that since AMD makes cheaper chips, they are usually saddled with cheaper motherboards too. However, the AMD motherboards tend to be much better proven. Intel has a mindboggling large number of options which they change constantly. AMD's strategy is much more upgrade friendly.

In the end, I look at three factors:
a) How much heat does it dissipate? Problems increase with temperature, particularly with temperature cycling. (Ex: Nvidia)
b) How long has the platform been in the market? Problems decrease as the manufacturer gains experience.
c) How many have shipped? Lots of purchases indicate a more accurate review base.

I bought an AMD Phenom II X4 965 black edition processor last Christmas. I looked it up online on one of those sites that rank all the processors by speed, and the processor I got was actually slightly faster than an i7 processor that was more than $100 more than the Phenom. Plus, I had the option of overclocking it, to go even faster.

Save some $, and go with AMD.

For years we had diffrent computers and chips. We had no problems with Amd, they were easier to overclock if you wanted too. I have seen many intel chips coupled with intel motherboards that were crap. I have no problem buying Amds. For years they have been compared...a lot of shilling if you ask me.

Same here - AMD 965. I wanted a processor with a high-clock speed to maximize single-thread performance. AMD was way cheaper than Intel. Price was no object, until I saw how much Intel wanted for the extra 20% in speed. I could purchase another computer with the price difference.

This is not the application I use, but it is similar. It gives an idea of the available performance increase from purchasing faster processors: http://www.tomshardware.com/charts/desktop-cpu-charts-2010/Archiving-WinZIP-14,2431.html

The Intel Q8300 is $159 and scores 402 (WinZip) and 12066 (3D Mark Vantage Overall).
The AMD 965 is $175 and scores 261 (WinZip) and 13527 (3D Mark Vantage Overall).
The Intel i7-975 XE is $1,275 and scores 221 (WinZip) and 16075 (3D Mark Vantage Overall).

The 6 Core Chips:
AMD 1090T is $239 and scores 14567 (3D Mark Vantage Overall).
Intel i7-980X is $1,139 and scores 17114 (3D Mark Vantage Overall).

Intel's price jumps 375% to 730% for 15 to 20% extra performance. Additionally, AMD has less expensive, and well proven motherboards. I bought AMD.

1090T Overclocked to 3900 ------- 19388 (3d Mark Vantage)
1090T Overclocked to 4000 ------- 20097 (3d Mark Vantage)
1090T Overclocked to 4100 ------- 20422 (3d Mark Vantage)

There was a while when AMD had the fastest chips. It was short-lived, though, only because Intel has almost always had more money to invest in R&D. There's nothing wrong with the quality of either, as such.

To compare any specific chipset, I'd recommend Tom's Hardware (google it).

Also Intel is first and foremost military grade and consumer second. AMD is consumer built to be an affordable option to Intel. AMD is always trying to play catch up but, is usually (if not always) better value

That's interesting. Historically, the space/military/embedded products that I came accross were made by AMD and Harris. Intel repeatedly discontinues entire groups of embedded products and/or sells the divisions that make them. Intel abandons all of the older platforms long before they become space rated and pass the military/space EMI specifications.

I had an AMD chip a few years back. What a mistake! That thing would overheat after 10 mins of watching any video.

The Intel Pentium D processors overheated and required a steady airflow too. Replaced many fans on those. Both manufacturers had issues with a certain generation of chips. Although, AMD saw the light and cut back on power dissipation first.

The A in AMD stand for Asian. They are famous for poor service, I put my dick on an AMD CPU and it would not give me a BJ. Also they are famous for bait and switch, was jerking to some hot hetero porn on an AMD computer, just as I came, the CPU switched it to gay porn.

Bullshit from the first statement.

Advanced Micro Devices.

Oh, wait a minute! Your post was meant to be a joke! O.K.! ;)

I've used them both over the years.

Today, CPU’s have become more of a commodity. There’s not much differentiation among them anymore.
Intel and AMD quality is about the same. Intel currently has slightly better performance but not by a noticeable difference.

Intel costs a little more because you’re paying for the brand.

Today, I would recommend that computer shoppers be more indifferent to the CPU and focus more of their attention on the video card, the hard drive and the memory size and speed.

I've used both and think they are both rock solid. You can save a few bucks going with AMD. Intel and AMD are always competing for bragging rights on who is the best and fastest and trade turns at times being number 1 here. It's a good competition that keeps Intel prices from going up too high.

Most people are better off getting a cheaper AMD processor vs intel processor and spending the rest on an SSD. Today the CPU is not the defining line between a fast and slow computer like it was 10 years ago.

true, though, the right SSD makes a huge difference.

my opinion is that as long as you do not buy an SSD based on the first generation JMicron controller you are good. A SSD using a first generation indilinx or intel based controller is still able to put up very respectable numbers and give you 80%-90% the speed experience (by that I mean boot speed and performing common everyday tasks, not moving 100GB of data around) of current top of the line SSDs based on newer controllers.

I will be on the hunt on boxing day for a 80-120GB SSD. I am pimping a tiny 30 GB SSD on my laptop, makes my laptop go vroom vroom but need more boom boom space.
