An invitation to help my research

I am a freelance writer, based in the UK, and I am doing research on a series of articles I am preparing on the world-wide sex industry.

Of the many escort & client website communities around the world, TERB has many elements that make it especially interesting and I am keen to have contact (anonymously) with participants from both sides of the business. I plan to write a major piece centered upon TERB and how the psychology of paid sex is worked out in cyberspace, based upon my future e-discussions with some of you. I'll be submitting it to various Canadian journals for publication, but I can't guarantee that it will appear. It may be that it's published in the UK or elsewhere.

I have "lurked" for a while to gain impressions as to how the community operates. I have decided not to approach any of you directly or via a PM, but instead to invite responses to my PM address or email address from anyone who wants to comment on the issues below. Now, I won't deny that some participants' psychology intrigues me more than others', and I may approach some of you directly as this progresses, but for now, please respond as you see fit.

I promise anonymity, including my own. You fascinate me, individually and collectively, and I hope to write something incisive, thoughtful and that conveys the realities, good and bad, of the modern manifestation of the oldest profession in the world.

My questions follow below.

My questions

If you respond to my invitation, by all means say what you want, but if you can help me with the following, I'll be most grateful.

For escorts:

- let me know why you got into the business
- discuss in rough terms how financially rewarding it is
- for some of you I know it's your only job, but others juggle careers. For the latter group, how do you manage the balance?
- for those of you who rely upon electronic marketing (websites) to attract clients, can you elaborate upon how websites, email, phone and so on work to assess clients
- how do you handle your safety?
- what role does TERB and other similar sites have for you? How does it feel to be reviewed? Is it a necessary evil or do you welcome a critique of your activity?

For clients:

- using prostitutes has been regarded as a private, even shameful thing for millenia, yet now websites like TERB make it possible to discuss activity in public. How valuable to you is the forum for comment?
- in an age when sex between consenting adults is easy to find, what are the benefits of escorting/hobbying?
- many recent posts on TERB have explored the pathos and even trauma of the client/SP relationship, some most acutely and even poignantly. Those of you who would like to comment further are most welcome.

More to follow over the coming days...

I would question the validity of your statement. Sex has a price on so many levels. If it was as "easy to find" as you suggest, there would be no hobby in this form.

What kind of journals? (Can you name them?)

Do you intend to name TERB or will it be "a major website focused on escort activities in Canada which has grown to become a community of sorts"?

Huh? It seems to me that most writers engaged in writing a feature article about ... anything ... would provide not only their real name, but also references to a few of their published articles (preferably online).

Just to establish credibility, you know?

Why is that not the case with The writer?

It's also the case that, even if an article doesn't name someone, the writer would have to know who exactly the person was.

And now it's time for Novel Writing, which today come from the west country on Dorset

Commentator:

Hello, and welcome to Dorchester, where a very good crowd has turned out to watch local boy The writer write his new novel "The Sex Review Board", on this very pleasant June morning. This will be his eleventh novel and the fifth of the very popular Toronto novels, and here he comes! Here comes The writer, walking out towards his desk. He looks confident, he looks relaxed, very much the man in form, as he acknowledges this very good natured bank holliday crowd. And the crowd goes quiet now, as The writer settles himself down at the desk, body straight, shoulders relaxed, pen held lightly but firmly in the right hand. He dips the pen...in the ink, and he's off! It's the first word, but it's not a word - oh, no! - it's a doodle. Way up on the top of the lefthand margin is a piece of meaningless scribble - and he's signed his name underneath it! Oh dear, what a disapointing start. But his off again - and here he goes - the first word of The writer's new novel, at eleven oh-five on this very lovely morning, it's three letters, it's the definite article, and it's "The". Dennis.

Dennis:

Well, this is true to form, no surprises there. He started five of his eleven novels to date with the definite article. We had two of them with "It", there's been one "But", two "At"s, one "On" and a "Dolores", but that of course was never published.

Commentator:

I'm sorry to interrupt you there, Dennis, but he's crossed it out. The writer, here on the first day of his new novel, has crossed out the only word he has written so far, and he's gazing off into space. Oh, ohh, there he signed his name again.

Dennis:

It looks like "Alien-The Real Story" all over again.

Commentator:

But he's...no, he's down again and writting, Dennis, he's written "B" again, he's crossed it out again, and he has written "A" - and there is a second word coming up straight away, and it's "Sat" - "A Sat" - doesn't make sense - "A Satur" - "A Saturday" - it's "A Saturday", and the crowd are loving it, they are really enjoying this novel. And it's "afternoon", it's "Saturday afternoon", a comfortable beginning, and he's straight on to the next word - it's "in" - "A Saturday afternoon in" - "in" - "in" "in Nov" - "November" - November is spelled wrong, he's left out the second "E", but he's not going back, it looks like he's going for the sentence, and it's the first verb coming up - it's the first verb of the novel, and it's "was", and the crowd are going wild! "A Saturday afternoon in November was", and a long word here - "appro" - "appro" - is it a "approving"? - no, it's "approaching" - "approaching" - "A Saturday afternoon in November was approaching" - and he's done the definite article "but" again. And he's writing fluently, easily with flurring strokes of the pen, as he comes up to the middle of this first sentence. And with this eleventh novel well underway, and the prospects of a good days writing ahead, back to the studio.

Goober:

Small wonder that you have a Douglas Adams quote as a signature. Truly an inspired piece of work.

... I will then balance out the merits of appearing on one of your fabulously intellectual television programs "The Mike Bullard Show", with that marvelously witty host, the potential uproar of which will then force me to create my own board of nigh-on uncontrollable castaways, attempt to create my own escort service, advertise for young women to encourage their participation in your local sex trade [with a significant price break for myself, possibly for others on my site] and then attempt to extinguish all the flames which have suddenly sprung up on my site...

perhaps he should shorten his name to "twriter"?

Thanks to all the comedians

However, I hope that some of you may want to help.

I am a young journalist (25), getting started in my business and have nothing of note to direct any of you to for reference. If you think the Derbyshire Deadbeat Chronicle or the Fife Courier warrant attention, I would discourage you.

I'm trying to get ahead, and, surprise, surprise, I know that sex sells. That's why I'm asking for some help. I promise:

- fair reporting
- anonymity
- a favourable impression of TERB to be created (seems to me it acts as a useful, even therapeutic cyber counselling room)
- no criticism of what SPs or clients do

Of course, I could act like a traditional British tabloid journalist and make it all up, using names like "Goober" or "Alien" to drive my florid imagination. But where's the fun in that...

Help me and I'll make you as famous as Will's Juliette...
