Don't know much about them. Itching to spend some money. My set up is Tv, Pvr,Avr, and ps3.
We watch regular tv, recorded stuff from pvr, stream Amazon but a lot of what we watch is what i download off internet (i can get any movie or tv show). We do store photos on ps3 for easy viewing on the tv.

Here's my question, how can an android box add to our experience. What can it give me that i don't already have or what can it do better or easier. Trying to figure out if i should get one.

An android box in essentially a low powered computer running kodi with a few addons that allow you to stream TV shows and movies.

You can do exactly the same with with almost any computer, just install kodi and some addons. The addons are always changing but there is a good subreddit that usually has up to date information.

https://kodi.tv/

You can read more about kodi on their website, but the goal when it was first created was to play offline media files on the original Xbox titled XBMC (xbox media center).

I would suggest trying out a laptop or desktop connected to your tv with kodi installed and some addons you may be interested in.

You may also want to check out getting a raspberry pi 4. Much more freedom in what you can do, and actual support since the hardware is the same and the community is larger.

No not all the Apps in Kodi are illegal. If you use a Torrent then it is quite easy for the Copyright Company to track your IP address, though not your name and ID. However, streaming on those regular Apps (not torrents), makes it impossible for the Copyright Company to track your downloads. Using a VPN will make it virtually safe to stream or even use those torrents.

In Canada they have to prove your trying to sell the downloads, or you copied the whole thing on a disk.

Just watching on a stream, like Netflix, with no copies will get you a 10,000 fine.

No international lawyer will go after you.

They send a letter in the mail to threaten you ( after watching thousands of hours of illegal they never sent me anything ), you can just stop watching for awhile, I'd say a year or two. Just get DVD's from the library if your poor, it's the same shit.

Thank you everybody for your input. Appreciate it.
Since I can download anything I want now anyway, I dont think there is much that an android box will add to my options.

Curious about the work effort involved. I've got Netflix, Crave and Prime. Was debating Disney+ and Dzon. The annual cost is not that bad. Would be better if I could do Hulu+/Disney out of the US, even better out of India to get the Hotstar. But the convenience of just having everything on demand if I'm in the GTA, traveling, at the cottage etc. does seem to outweigh the pain of looking everywhere. Now the special sports on the other hand is a different story, hence the curiousity of how much work this all takes? Cheers.

With a vpn, I can go on pirate bay and get any movie or show I want. To get quality downloads that are going to look good on my 65" 4k tv, the movie has to be released in br but the shows just have to have been shown. Latest compression is very good. I put the files on usb stick and watch thru my sony 4k blueray player that has an excellent upscaler {better than my tv}. Everything now looks as almost as good as streaming 4k from prime. Once you have the files on a usb, you can watch them anywhere. I will take a season of a show we are watching with us on Carribean vacations to watch later in the evening. It's a bit of work but you get good at it. I love the quality of the downloads. Most downloads i will do are 1080p which upscales very well to 4k. You can actually download 4k quality for some stuff but the files are huge. Best thing is that it's all free.
