There was a prior thread on Ryerson, now apparently McDonald is next on the hit parade for being mean to indians

http://www.680news.com/2017/08/24/o...-union-calls-renaming-john-macdonald-schools/

Why not just rename all the schools to indian appropriate names?
It's "Macdonald."

And I think the OHRC goes with 'indigenous' nowadays.

So what are they going to do, rename John A MacDonald High School as Shito Pukerama High?

It's important to understand John A's mindset. He was obsessed by the notion that British North America would eventually be annexed by the USA. His goal was to get the country united at all cost, unfortunately the native indians got in the way of his plan. When Alexander Macenzie was PM, Sitting Bull brought his Lakota Tribe into Canada. John A was alarmed by this, he foresaw an eventual American invasion. It clouded his judgement, when he became PM again, his agenda toward the indians was harsh. The execution of Louis Riel, who played a role in the creation of the province of Manitoba, left permanent cracks in Confederation.

A solution might be to eliminate names on buildings altogether. They could be identified with numbers. Examples - School no. 5741, Hospital no. 9053. The problem would be that some cultures consider some numbers to be unlucky, so we have the same problem all over again.

Pretty simple view of history................Sir John was elected more than once and so he largely reflected the views of the Canadian population of the time. All of us must share the responsibility for the residential school system. Using the politically correct thinking of 2017 and applying it to social issues over a century ago is foolish. And by the way, if we are so smart, how are we doing sorting out the issues of indigenous people in the last 10 years? The residential school system was an attempt to help. If the people of that era wanted to eliminate the indigenous populations there were far simpler ways. The US cavalry south of the border did not build any schools. The US cavalry was the answer the US developed to the question of indigenous people.

One thing John A had a huge hand in doing was that he prevented our absorption into the US. Those elementary school teachers who voted for this hairbrained motion should check out the salaries and benefits of their counterparts in most of the USA.

Whats wrong with renaming and pulling down stuff thats offensive?

The Taliban have doing the same kind of thing for a long time, pulling down or just bombing statues and buildings that offend their sensibilities?

Oh, yikkkes!

There are a bunch of books that really ought to be burned too, lest they offend somebody. I'll get a lighter if you get some gas. ;)

I posted to their site to send me all their $10 bills with MacDonald on them and I'd dispose of them in an environmentally friendly manner. Haven't gotten one yet, their words speak louder than their actions. Politically correct = the tail wagging the dog IMHO.

I cant believe this.... I get it is offensive to many people especially the Indigenous people. However , with that being said it is important that all Canadians understand their history and learn about sacrifices and things people had to do to make this country what it is today. There is so many changes going on in the school system that personally when i have kids/ think about having kids - they will be home schooled.

I learned about MacDonald and his contributions to this country and as much as he was wrong in the genocide of indigenous people that is no reason to remove his name from schools. He was after all the first prime minister and was elected several times. Doesn't that mean he was good at what he did regardless of some of the things he did?
Personally , i think the schools should focus on bigger issues than the name of a school ? Like how about the fact that there is a school bus driver shortage and that bullying is still a major problem in elementary schools.

The 401 is still the MacDonald- Cartier freeway and i believe/ hope it always will be. Our first prime minister should be honored always because without him , their would be no Canada.

However with that being said - we can not move forward if we deny our past.

The indigenous people are offended but I'm sure many people are offended by other things in the school system as well... I mean just months ago they started allowing prayer in schools. The question is how many changes are they going to make to accommodate everyones needs?

I don't have kids yet lol but when I do I will definitely consider that as well as home schooling.
sweetiepieexo, think about a private, not public school. You'l have a lot more choice, and in some cases, some say in what or how your kid is taught.

IMO, this is the root cause of all these issues. Yet nobody wants to tackle it. Far easier to rename schools, remove statues than to address the problems facing indigenous people living on reserves like access to clean water, fresh food, fuel and proper shelter.

lets just get rid of the genocide terminology sweetiepieexo. If extermination was some sort of hidden agenda, then it was a very inefficient attempt. Look at Hitler's Germany, Stalin's USSR or Cambodia for real genocide and don't anyone put Sir John in that group!!!!

I am simply going by what the article said. Also I believe I learned something about that in history or social studies . Cant remember which one but it sounds very familiar. Regardless he was an amazing man and they should keep the names of the schools as they are. Their are reasons why they are named that and if people don't like well - too bad so sad.

Harper tried by attaching responsibility to the finances. The natives (well, the millionaire chiefs) did not want this.
Of course the chiefs did not want to take responsibility over the finances. It's too easy to continue to mooch off the government while doing nothing for their people. All the while complaining that the government is not doing enough for the natives. The sad reality is that the harder they hold onto their traditions, the worse they will make it for their own people.

This situation is similar to what used to happen in the Soviet Union. When a public figure fell out of favour all evidence that they existed was erased. Photographs were doctored to remove their image. People who owned a set of encyclopedias were set a new page to paste over the page where there was an article about the offending person.
