Two years ago the U.S.S. John McCain collided with the Oil Tanker Alnic off Singapore it now comes out that the collision was in significant measure caused by overly high tech -- touch screen -- controls such that the bridge watch thought they were reducing power to both screws but instead only reduced power on the port screw sending the ship into a turn directly across the track of the oil tanker.
The U.S. Navy has now announced that they are bringing back mechanical throttles to the Destroyer/Frigate force. Sometimes the traditional ways are still best.
