Antigua or Jamaica ?

I've never been to Antigua but wayy back in 1995 I spent 3 weeks in JA. I spent 3 days in MoBay then 2.5 weeks in Negril. I never had any problem's with safety and I went everywhere. I rented a 50cc scooter and rode from Negril back to MoBay by myself because in 95 the only bank was back in MoBay and I had to make an withdrawal.
It took me about 2.5 hours to ride there but the best part was all the little villages/parrish's I went through along the way. I would stop in at a village and the locals would give me coconut water and fruit. They didn't ask me for money. They were very, very hospitable and friendly. One man even climbed a 20 foot tree to get me a coconut then craved it up for me to drink and eat the jelly. I give him some money and he was very appreciative.
I absolutely loved Negril. I met sooo much women on the beach and in the area and they were all fun to be with. I stayed at a $50. a night hotel and a local women washed my cloths every 4 days for a very small fee. Even when I rode to Savlamar I stopped and picked up hot women that were walking in the middle of nowhere and put them on the back of my scooter. One hot chick that I picked up on the scooter stayed with me the entire day when I went touring around in the spice mines in Sav.

Jamaica is relatively safe...but only on the north and west side of the isle...Kingston is dangerous..but its mostly local problems..Negril, and MoBay are safe...albeit , you have to get around alot of haggling on tourist beaches and markets..and every dude is selling weed..don't buy from them, its a rip off...go to a local market and ask a old lady...they have the good stuff..lol

Jamaica has very dangerous areas and the areas that are safe change from daylight to evenings. Antigua if you can afford it is a much better experience.
I stayed in a resort in Ocho Rios (Jamaica) about ten years ago and disliked it. The hotel security was good but I like to wander around outside otherwise I feel like I'm vacationing in a prison camp. As soon as I walked out the vendors/beggars just bugged the shit out of you. I noticed that they would wait until one pitch was finished before the next one jumped in front of you. It was continuous and draining. I ended up paying one guy $ 20 US just to walk around with me and keep the vendors/ beggars at bay.
I never feel threatened but it turned me off and I never returned. One of my friends was robbed by a man with a machete in his hotel room which I understand was rare. He was offered a extra free week stay at the hotel but had to return.

Never been to Antigua so cannot comment....Jamaica is a great time however. Very friendly people, dirt poor of course (yes, people will beg/barter/etc for money if outside your resort....poverty will do that to a person). I would agree with Carling in that the north coast to the west (lets say Negril to Ocho Rios and everything in between) is your best bet for a safe, fun holiday. Avoid Kingston.
If you like to smoke, it is plentiful and readily available as you might imagine. NEVER pay what people are asking. Five or Ten USD goes a long way

how can it be a rip off if $10 buys you more than you can smoke in a week anyways?
