I own a duplex apt building that needs landscaping, I was wondering if I could save money and do it myself???
Any advice??????

Does the lawn need just seeds, or do I have to buy sods of grass and replant?????

If they put a lot of salt on the sidewalk in the winter you could have a problem getting a hedge to grow that close to the sidewalk.

Esco, there is a member on here appropriately named, ahem, landscaper lol...

But from the looks of it your "lawn" is heavily shaded so you'll have to get a type of grass that can grow in the shade.

If you want to protect it from salt etc you could install some pavers vertially around the perimeter at a 45 deg angle and or some decorative edging.

As for a hedge, you will need to calculate your linear length and buy multiple plants to fill that length. Depth and spacing is dependant upon the plant. I've planted a few (forget the name of the plant) and they came with a canvas bag around the root ball. All I had to do was dig a hole (for each plant) deep enough so the top of the bag was at ground level, cut the ties on the bag and bury it. If you're a do it yourselfer go to any reputable greenhouse/garden centre store and they can help you out.

It would be easiest to scrape the whole thing up.

Cut it down 8"

Supply and install 8" of top soil (triple mix)

Sod appropriately.

The problem with grass is that it needs to be watered. It would be an ideal time to install an underground sprinkler system. Have it come on every other day for 15 minutes at 5 a.m. and your lawn will look great.

You can buy everything from Home Depot. (That's what I did). I love my sprinikler system. Never ever have to worry about watering again. Cant forget to water, can't forget leaving it on. It waters efficiently because you adjust the heads to suit. I was travelling for work all the time, would spend money on landscaping, come home and it's dead. Solved that problem.

There is a guy in the plumbing section of the HD at Keele and St. Claire - Mike with the poney tail. If he's still there, he's a good guy and he'll design your system for you if you make an appointment. Good guy.

I actually just got back from a walkabout and I should have mentioned this before: instead of a hedge you could do something really nice with pressure treated 4 x 4s around the perimeter and or put some planters in the corners with some flowering shrubs. Then re-seed the grass on the interior and you'd have a nice little yard.

Funny enough a commercial for "quick grow" just was on the tube and they say that stuff will even grow on bare concrete...lol...might be worth the $20.00 to try it out.......(and I think they give you a free spatula with a built in MP3 player and tire pressure gauge if you order within the next 10 minutes lol)

I had some bare spots on my lawn last summer from the lack of rain.

This spring I dug the areas up and threw down some top soil.

I then sprinkled fertilizer and grass seed with another layering of top soil.

Watered the shit out it for a couple of days and it's been fine since.

My lawn looks great but my Neighbor Mr. Rosengoldbergstein doesn't like it.

Neither of those two were what I saw on the tube....if I see the ad again I'll let you know.

I watch the fight channel and it's on there all the time. RIght up there with the World Trade Centre coin where the buildings dramatically RISE up in gleaming silver lol (that ad kills me, right along with the corvette coin with the headlights that turn on lol).

When you're finished pour beer on it. It'll come up half cut. Saves work.....

Screw the grass.

Rent a tiller and mix some triple mix into the yard. Put a number of different perennial plants in, some decorative grasses, and never cut the lawn again.

Have a little jungle.

And yes, you can do it yourself.

Old rail way ties make for an interesting barrier between the sidewalk and your garden.

Get yourself 3 or 4 bags of topsoil, spread it around on the barespots, maybe with a little peat moss and some pre-emergent fertiizer.

Then buy some good grass seed (buy something like Scotts, not the bulk stuff which of full of filers). Sprinkle it about, water every day for a couple of weeks and voila!

If the area is shaded, get seed geared for shade. I'd suggest talking to someone at a place like Terra (a real garden centre) and even take your photo in.

You could also sod that area in about 10 minutes, but you would need to rip all the old stuff up first, then apply the topsoil etc. Seeding is just less work, but takes a bit longer. If you water it well, you'll have the beginnings of a decent lawn in a 3 - 4 weeks.

The hedge could be fixed, but it's probably easier to rip it out and start from scratch. That way all of the bushes will match. The thought about road salt is legitimate. The folks at the garden centre can advise you on the best type of shrub, and how to plant properly. The main things are getting the holes large enough (but not too large!), unballing the roots well, adding good soil, bone meal and lots of water for the first couple of weeks until the roots get going.

If you are concerned about salt in the winter, you can always wrap the bushes in burlap to protect them!

I ain't no landscaper, but I have an acre of yard that I brought back from death when I bought this house a couple of years ago...

And did I mention to water it lots?

Have fun with it!

Or you could also hire a landscaper to do it, but this really isn't something that couldn't be done in an afternoon... I'd estimate it to be a 6-beer job!
