By that I mean folks that like the 15% of virtually any music genre? Assuming 85% of any genre is probably pretty much money-motivated schmaltz, and 15% is the great stuff where the players are really into it. If so, what was the genre you discovered and were surprised to find there was some good stuff you really liked?

I found today I was totally into Brazilian Samba, Morna (a New World variation of Portuguese Fado) and Native American PowWow music.

I tell you, no matter how bad a day I could be having, music always gets me back to Smilesville :D

I also enjoy a very wide variety of music, but lately I've been really delving into old blues and country tunes from the 20's and 30's.
I found a cool program to help find stuff related to music I already know, you should try www.pandora.com and then input a song or artist.
Just try and stump it!
They will continuously play related music and you can tweak it to change directions.
I've had it playing for weeks, it's just as good as satellite radio and opens you up to things beyond your own collection.

Dude! That Pandora thingy is fantastic...what a great concept!

http://www.gnoosic.com/ is program that you input what you know you already like, and it pops up one name for you. Then click on 'more bands' below what its selected and it builds a sort of band universe where it clusters artists by their musical relationship to one another, and the closer to the centre, the more likely it'll be what you're looking for; farther away will be less related.

For instance, I put in Cesaria Evora, Bebel Gilberto and Asian Dub Foundation, and it popped Lee Scratch Perry. The 'more bands' music map it created had about 35 bands, and included people as diverse as Fila Brazillia, Negativland, and Thelonious Monk.

Between these two tools, you got yourself a New Music Nirvana!

Another cool website is http://www.liveplasma.com/ it creates a web of bands or even movies that are somehow related so if you are interested in one it gives you others to choose from.

Hip hop definitely has a nice 15% if you are willing to look.....

e.g. here are some older or less known bands that get eclipsed by the ganstas and bling.....
jurrassic 5, blackalicious, dead prez, the roots, common, mos def, talib kweli, pharcyde, de la soul, jill scott, erykah badu, tribe called quest, digable planets

Try some House music

What kind of house did you have in mind?

I prefer hardhouse, classic, deep house.. nothing like the sound of the underground!

Speaking of house or other dj based music..... what are good ways of downloading it?

I find limewire is limited mainly because I'm not sure what names to use and general words like house can get you a wide range of quality from down right cheesy to good.

Any good names to search for?

I've heard good things about soulseek.... true false?

I found soulseek to be a bit of a bitch, maybe more computer minded people have an easier time of it.

Limewire and bearshare are only good for single songs, if you want albums you have to go torrents.

I dont know whats a good torrent site for House/dance/techno albums, sorry.

If you find a good site let me know.

Esco are you drunk?

I was asking for names of DJs that you would recommend. I thought that's what this thread was about..... taking a genre of music and highlighting the top 15%.

Sheesh every discussion with seems to end this way.

How about names DJs to search for sets from?
Not sure what you like, but these are guys I like doing all kinds of vibes;

Paul Oakenfold, Handsome Boy Modeling School, 2 Many DJs, DJ Yoeri, DJ Krush,
DJ Keoki, Cold Cut, DJ Food, DJ Q-Bert, Kid Koala/Del Tha Funkee Homosapian/Dan The Automator, Basement Jaxx, Junior Jack, Jatt Mix A-lot.

Hopefully something will click and then from there you can use some of the programs suggested in the thread to find more people doing the sounds you like.
