Apparently Swiss watches are not what they used to be. Many Swiss watches (including Tag, Omega, Breitling, Tissot...) buy their movement from one or two companies notably ETA.
This movement has been copied indistinguishly in China. ETA also sells their movements to third parties that end up in China. China has also copied the CNC programs for various watches incl. Panerai.
So a fake watch may not be so fake after all..... for a tenth of the price.
True, ETA supplies the part
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ETA_SA (funny, they list Porsche design as high-end watch, Swiss used to laugh at Germans, Seiko & others.).
Selective grade of ETA parts to different watch makers. The high-end parts are limited quantity. Knock-off with cheap parts don't have the same finish, accuracy & fit, will work briefly but suddenly stop working shortly after.
Swiss watchmakers band together like a cartel to limited quantities/price & chock-hold their supplier. Like Belguim & Jewish community did with Diamonds & Middle-east with OPEC.
Even though knock-off readily available to most Chinese, nearly every mainlander at the watch convention brought one or more high-end watch (not samples) to bring home.
Middle-east & Asia are growing markets replacing the U.S., says Rolex, Omega, Patek Philippe.
