Hell. Where Else?

Hi Guys and Gals,

I'm getting a new computer and like the looks and the price of the new HP as seen at FutureShlock:

Here

Has anybody tried the PentiumD chip set. I'm led to believe that the chip can operate "like" a dual processor [with not quite dual processor results]. I image that it's similar to HT technology but is it better? And is it as good as an AMD Athlon 64bit.

PC Magazine has rated it well but what do the real experts, you, think?

Link Here

Thanks for all your advice,

SQ

dual core is what sun servers have been running for a while HT is what OSX has been running since it was NEXT......... It is cute when Windows users think they are cutting edge...... go bill go

P4D [rocks]

I've been using a couple of machines with dualcore pentium D cpus and they run rather well! the best performance improvement has been in heavily multithreaded applications [rendering video, cracking prime numbers, large database transversals]

win2k, win2k3, Linux and BSD all seem to like the Pentium D and run well.

I've measured an average %75 improvement over single core cpus.

that is all.

go for it.
enjoy

How hot do these D chips run?

Do they require extra cooling making the machines a little noisier? I have an application that loves dual processors...but sound/noise floor is an issue.

P4D temp

the P4Ds dont run overly warm. the standard cooling equipment that comes in the retail boxed cpu kit has been perfectly fine and dandy. just make sure you have sufficient airflow in and out of the chassis. [like with all machines]

note; when I'm working these things, [my machines in general] I tend to run them really hard with the proc usage averaging 80% [which will normally heat up ANY cpu]

noise isnt really an issue. [just use good quality fans]

hope this helps
cheers

Win 2k Server sometimes does not notice the dual core processor as it as never designed for it but both Linux and BSD pick up on it right away. I have had hit and miss on W2003 server at a few places.
I have found the Dual runs amazingly well on a hacked OSXx86 install without VM...... Rosetta rocks with CS2 apps and even FinalCut renders much faster. The only big issues i have seen is compiling chokes up once and a while.
I ran a top on the Dual running 10.4.2 while rendering in FCP and using Motion only saw 46% processor usage.
The one thing i have noticed with the Dual and programs like FirstClass Mail server and Razors Edge is that they do not take advantage of the D set chips and run slower on a 2003 box then on my dual Xeon.
Also Postgresql, MySQL and Postfix runs like crap on the dual on queries. These were run on a Ferdora build a Debian build and a BSD build. MySQL and PostgreSQL also ran like crap on the hacked OSX Intel box.
Chip set has huge potential it would be nice if developers took advantage of it.
It will be interesting after MS said they have made huge development erros over the years and see what they move toward in Vista with it now being built from the Kernal out and modules added to it.
