that the cost of groceries is going up? I have noticed in the store that I do groceries they used to have packages of cheese that was 3 packages together for 5 bucks and now it is down to two attached packages and a few other changes to other items in the store ie... no longer selling family size in some products etc... I have estimated that now I am spending roughly 60 dollars per week now for a family of 4 and do not really believe I have changed my spending habits. It seems to be just the past 3 weeks however ie... one day I go stock up on meats another day I go stock up on baking items and another day for school supplies for the boys and miscellanious items ie... shampoos etc... This does send me shopping roughly 3 to 4 days out of the week. The past 3 weeks however I have noticed the spending has increased by 60 bucks if not more. Has prices gone up that much on other items and I have not noticed or are my kids eating a more and I have not noticed as I do just replace things as I see fit. Or has the past three weeks been just an exception to the rule and things will go back to normal. Has anyone else seen an increase in spending?

ummmmmm yea

Once gas prices went up so did food costs. They just never came down as the cost of transportation did.

They've totally got me as with so many items that used to be family sized or larger they stopped selling them and I have no clue really on some items what the prices used to be. Some items however I have noticed the prices on smaller packages stayed the same but they took the larger products away I guess they make more money that way too. In the end they are forcing us to also buy more. In the end I realize that they are using many tactics to get us to spend more.

I've noticed as well.

Just yesterday I dropped into Shoppers, to pick up my usually.
I noticed a huge increase in Vanilla scented bubble bath, Vaseline and Latex gloves.

The cost of living sucks

One of the things that bugs me is when they reduce the size of the package and either keep the price the same or it goes up a few cents.

Example ice cream used to be a 2 liter container, now it is in a 1.66 liter container. It looks virtually identical except a little bit smaller. The price used to be $2.99 with the specials being 2 for $5.00. Now it is $3.99 and the special is $2.99 each.

This has been a favorite tactic of the food industry for years with things like potato chips or other things that are not traditionally bought by weight. They simply change the packaging slightly, usually just shrink it a little and pretend that nothing is different.

The only way I can fight back against this is to stop buying the product and switch brands. I hope there are others who do the same.

Couple of reasons. CAD is worth 20% less USD today compared to a year ago. During the Winter lots of fruits and veggies are imported and probably priced in USD's plus transport cost.

one major grocery chain also has a hidden "tax" or rebate built in all their packaging costs.
If a supplier wants to supply this grocery chain goods they have to buy all packaing materials from the grocery chains preferred suppliers.
To be a " preffered" supplier you have kick back 5% to 8% of the cost to the grocery chain.
this cost is incorporated in the cost of the food and the consumer never sees it.
bullshit and I think it is illegal.
they dont want anybody to know about it

I was going to post a thread on this exact topic. The other day, I went to buy ingredients to make a pizza. The cost of the ingredients ending up being more than the cost to simply have one delivered! Cheese, especially is prohibitively expensive (7 or 8 bucks for a bag of mozarella). The world is running out of food, for one.

I usually spend at least 300 dollars a month on groceries, for myself. How you can feed a family of four on less is pretty incredible. I even shop at NoFrills and buy lots of No Name brand items, which help cut my bill.

I have noticed. Fortunately I have tons of moose, dear and duck left. Also, I have a large vegetable garden where I can produce for the winter months. I still have to shop for the staples though.

Hmmm... sounds as if A1 is a hunter/ gatherer... But... isn't difficult to take down a moose with one of these?

No, not really. Gardening is another one of my hobbies, and you can't beat the price and knowing that the food is chemical free. As for the meat... Well, you can't beat the price of that either, and totally steroid free.

I think that the supermarkets are raising the price of food because they know that people aren't going to restaurants as much anymore. Just my opinion.

The price of Metro stock (mru-t) and Loblaws stock (l-t) are close to their 52 week highs.

Is this just a coincidence or what?
