Anyone tried DirectBuy?

With my house closing looming on the horizon, I've been in the market for a ton of reno and decor related stuff.

DirectBuy's TV shill caught my attention, since they claim to sell almost everything I need, from granite counter tops to appliances and pool supplies - with no mark ups. The package they sent me is sending up red flags, though - page after page yakking about how 'the initial investment will pay off', but no mention of what that investment actually is...

Anyone have any ideas of what they want for their memberships? I really don't want to have to go there and sit through a hard sell, just drag the dollar amount out of them. I hate that kind of stuff.

Thanks,

Morgan

Yeah, just did some more digging and found out they're pretty much a scam.

Sample of reviews on them:

Ray,

What is the annual fee? I can never find that out.

about $3,900 for the first 3 years, payment due in one lump sum; $150 a year thereafter.

Note: they have a handy “installment plan” which bumps the total cost up to around $5,000, but spreads it out over the three years. Of course, they dont tell you that it’ll cost you $5k this way (no mention of interest, increased rate, or anything), they just assume you are too stupid to realize that they are smacking you for another $1,000.

Plus, you have a one-time offer to joint; you can’t go home review the contract or sleep on it; if you don’t sign before you walk out, you will never be allowed to join.

Excuse me, but if you want me to give you $4k without reading the contract, you can suck my ass.''

So, nevermind.

Anyone know a good place for higher end appliances, other than Caplan's?

One of my clients is a member, and he swears by it. If you are furnishing a whole house or doing major reno's it's worth it.

It is only worth the membership if you plan to spend tons of money. The membership price is steep but only worth it if you plan on furnishing/renoing the entire house within your membership years.

The only thing I don't like about it is not being able to see the items in person. It is like catalog shopping. I usually do my research at various stores and then go into Direct Buy to make the purchase.

It is definitely not for everyone but it has worked out for me.

Did you know......................

..................that you can negociate with furniture stores for a lower price than what is on the sticker. If your bouying a few items they are more likely to accomadate you.

Avoid

Avoid this place at all costs unless you are planning on doing something like buying $65,000 worth of cabinets. If you attend the sales presentation, they resort to "buy or die" hard sell tactics and "this offer is only available right now" -- always a good indication of a scam-type operation.

I bought my last appliances at Home and Rural, but I'm not even sure they're around anymore.

I'm going to check out Tasco tonight. I also need to get a price on granite counter tops...

Hopefully, the Home Show this weekend can help me search out a few deals.

Appliance Canada on Jane north of #7 is great. Tasco is pricey.

Morgan I have a great granite guy, pm me if you are interested.
