Are we all Dexters?

For those of you not familiar with the show "Dexter" this post will have no meaning so you probably want to move on. For the others ... Dexter has a secret. If the world finds out about his secret, his world falls apart. His secret behaviour is the result of a drive that he must satisfy. He goes to great lengths to keep his secret hidden. His secret behaviour is often ritualized. His secret would not be met with understanding because his behaviour is so far beyond the pale of normal.

No, we haven't murdered anyone. I don't want to carry the analogy too far. But many of us have had sex with hundreds of women in our lives. Have spent fortunes to do so. It is our secret and not one we want to share with "normal" society. In many ways, we are similar to Dexter.

huaa hua. and your piont is? everyone has to hide something.. nothing new... it is just a show... mind you it is a good show..my new favorate... it is kinda wierd rooting for a killer not to get caught... thoe there have been times thinking about some of the people that do things to children and get a slap on the wrist for the crime.. i would like to do a dexter on thier ass.... Big diff is that one is a legal issue (dex) and the other can be a moral issue (us)

Everyone has a "dirty little secret" that might cause their world to come apart. We all have a side to us that we don't want our business colleagues or SO's or friends to find out about.

It does not have to be as extreme as being a serial killer.

It's a good analogy.
A few people might do something extreme to keep a secret safe, some have a lot to lose if they were caught in adultery.
I'm thankful I'm not in that position.

I like the show and I think people can identify with the show because we all wear masks (e.g. work vs home vs family vs buddy vs hobby personnae). Also the show deals with addiction which again hits home for many. Finally it looks at the insincerity that's passed off as normal interactions. Okay one more thing I guess it brings into question just what is normal and how normal are people in reality or are we all faking it?

Yeah. Entertainment I'd say first and foremost since the story does have it's plot holes and problems. But I like the observations and comments that dexter makes with regards to society and how people act. It's not a super deep show by any means so at the end of the day I watch it because I enjoy the story because it unfolds like a mystery and I once in a while it's enjoyable to watch a darker show. Aside from the perspective it's not far off from other crime series where you watch to see what happens and the characters are interesting.
