Worry that we as a society are getting too soft.

Recently two sports related injuries I saw:

Separated shoulder - they put him OUT to pop it back in

Broken Collar-bone - they brought an ambulance - not needed, cut off his jersey and asked if it was ok to administer strong pain killers.

Pro cyclists are real men. Yes they finished the stage.

Maybe as a society we are getting too critical.

I get around.
Alot of sporting event records are being broken - running, weight lifting, strongman competitions. Lance Armstrong recently set a new course record at the Hawaiian 70.3 Ironman. More people than ever are participating in marathons, triathlons, charity 10K runs, huge bike rides, and wild events like Warrior Dash, Tough Mudder and the zombie-infested Run For Your Lives.

So maybe we as a society we are getting bigger faster fitter and stronger. Or maybe a couple of instances don't actually "prove" anything.

I think in the medical field we are conservative. One cannot be entirely certain that the injury is only a broken collar bone until there are x-rays.

Secondly with dislocated shoulders (which is what I am guessing you are talking about I don't think one pops a separated shoulder back in) there is some good clinical evidence that relocation under a general are more successful than those without depending on timing issues.

One thing that always blows my mind is the fact that 100 years ago, ~90% of the population was engaged in 1 industry: agriculture.

This meant that 90% of the population was engaged in physical labor for at least 80% of the working day.

Compare that to today...with obesity rates of ~18% in Canada, and I'd have to agree...society is soft.

Physically yes. Mentally or emotionally is a whole different question.

As a society we are getting soft. As for sports related injuries, bringing in qualified medical practioners is probably to keep from being sued by the players for not providing the proper medical care in taking care of injuries.
