Saw last night on CP24 the Argo owners are somewhat involved in this Toronto second NHL DREAM! Team !!!! Anyone know more?
Frank Fingers said:They are interested in buying the Phoenix Coyotes and keeping them in Phoenix.
But they'll lose money keeping them in the desert, and eventually beg Bettman to move the franchise to Toronto.
Can't the Phoenix Coyotes play a few "home" games in Hamilton just like the Buffalo Bills play a few home games in Toronto?Frank Fingers said:They are interested in buying the Phoenix Coyotes and keeping them in Phoenix.
That arena in Hamilton is 25 years old, and will need to be renovated to accomodate an NHL franchise. Also, adding a team in Hamilton might hurt the Buffalo Sabres fan base. Hamilton, also isn't a large city, attractive city or cosmopolitan city, and I would rather see another NHL team in Toronto, Winnipeg or Quebec City.Rockslinger said:Can't the Phoenix Coyotes play a few "home" games in Hamilton just like the Buffalo Bills play a few home games in Toronto?![]()
You can't compare the Phoenix Coyotes to the Pittsburg Penguins. Phoenix/Glendale was never a hockey mad city, and they have never made it past the first round of the playoffs while they've been there. The last time they made it past the first round was in 1987 when they were still the Winnipeg Jets, and they haven't made the playoffs since 2002. They also weren't lucky in the draft and got some below average players. Plus having Shane Doan as your captain isn't the greatest.21pro said:btw - Pittsburgh.... 3 seasons of complete sellouts to date after it was stated that here on terb that NHL hockey doesn't belong in Pittsburgh and can never be successful. I'm just sayin'...

Also, if for some very strange reason Hamilton did get a NHL team, they wouldn't have Hamilton in the name since no one in the US would know where it is. They would use either Ontario or Southern Ontario, and even Jim Balsillie said this.
Actually Columbus, OH is not only the capital of the state of Ohio, but it is also the largest city in that state. The city itself has a larger population than Cleveland and Cincinnati. Also, they previously had an NHL team in Ohio called the Cleveland Barons, and now they switched things up by adding a team in Columbus, which has been fairly successful.spankingman said:Whats so GREAT about Columbus Ohio Where is it? Buffalo attractive?
With the new border rules less Canadians will be going over to Buffalo anyway!! Its already a concern of the Bills and is documented.
I never said it will hurt Toronto, but there is a very strong chance that it will hurt Buffalo. That team was in trouble recently and might be again soon, and if you add a team in the Hamilton area many fans who attend the Buffalo games will be going to Hamilton instead.spankingman said:How is it going to hurt Buffalo or Toronto? Fans from Hamilton will go to TO and Buffalo to see the team.Tickets usually sold to Hamilton area people will now be available for more people in TO or Buffalo ITS A GREAT SETUP AND RIVALRY. Look at NYR NYI NJD PF all within about 100 miles.
When Winnipeg and Quebec City had their teams, they were not getting revenue sharing to help the small market Canadian teams like Edmonton, Ottawa and Calgary had received after they left the league. Edmonton and Ottawa have billionaire owners now, and along with Calgary have been doing well financially. If these plans were implemented, a team can survive in Winnipeg and Quebec City. Also Winnipeg has something Hamilton does not and that is a new arena, and there is also talk about a Russian billionaire wanting to get a team in Quebec City.spankingman said:Winnipg Quebec HAD their chance and couldnt make a go of it.Atlanta Minnesota are on their second time around. Anaheim SNUCK in with DISNEY Bucks. Why are there more teams in California than in Ontario?
Jim Ballsillie is NOT a billionaire????????? He more than likely has more cash than MLSE and Sabres combined. He is known worldwide for his BLACKBERRY.You would THINK the suits at the NOT HAMILTON LEAGUE would WANT to have a man of his knowledge wealth etc on board.Frank Fingers said:Actually Columbus, OH is not only the capital of the state of Ohio, but it is also the largest city in that state. And as boring as Buffalo is, it is more known in the US and they also currently have an NFL team, along with previously having the LA Clippers in the past. They are also a larger city than Hamilton.

One of the major barricades to allowing another NHL team in Southern Ontario is the Leafs. They don't want another team, and if there is one, they will be getting a lot of their money.

Also there are more teams in California for the simple reason that it's the most populated state in the US, and because the league wants the game to grow in the south.
some of us did.....and then they went and built the rink in a part of Phoenix that is miles away from where anyone goes. It's bad enough that they are trying to sell hockey in the desert.....but the location of the area is even a bigger problem.21pro said:can't more canadian hockey fans just retire in arizona and the problem will go away?
.
for what it is worth....the group of shareholers of MLSE include for starters...Teachers Pension Plan, TD Bank, Thompson family.....i think that trumps Jim Ballsillie.spankingman said:Jim Ballsillie is NOT a billionaire????????? He more than likely has more cash than MLSE and Sabres combined. s
If that's the case why don't they buy the Coyotes and move them to Winnipeg? Are you allowed to own more than 1 team?mac said:for what it is worth....the group of shareholers of MLSE include for starters...Teachers Pension Plan, TD Bank, Thompson family.....i think that trumps Jim Ballsillie.
They won't allow it since it will be considered a conflict of interest.lovelatinas said:If that's the case why don't they buy the Coyotes and move them to Winnipeg? Are you allowed to own more than 1 team?
They do have a new arena though, larger population, and even Bettman recommended Winnipeg, and that means they deserve a team more than Hamilton. It would be very nice for the Coyotes to return to Winnipeg and once again become the Jets. Talk about coming full circle!spankingman said:Winnipeg as hardly ATTRACTIVE in the dead of winter nor is it COSMOPOLITAN!!!
