Not really a techie and just received this mini laptop.
I know Linux does not need anti virus per se, but do I need a firewall and if so any recommendations.
Thanx

Believe that mini uses a stripped down version of Xandros OS, which may have a firewall included by default. Most linux distros come with a firewall, you just have to turn it on if you feel you need it. You would have to check yours. Xandros is easy to use, very intuitive. I played around with it, it's neat but didn't like it because of the small 4GB SSD that's 90% full when you get it. People have complained after doing OS updates the drive is 98% full. It needed a bigger SSD, at least 8GB.

The Asus has a slot for a sandisk. Just add 4-16G as another drive.

True but what will you do when updates completely fill up the original 4GB drive?

I wisely bought an Acer with 8G. It actually has TWO slots for sandisks, one of which
are magically appended to the "soldered" in 8G.

I am not quite sure what happens if you later remove that sandisk.

Thanx for your replies but what is Xandros? I thought Linux was the OS and if it has a firewall by default, How would I check that?

Linux has around 100 distros one of them being Xandros the OS you may have. To find a firewall explore the Help section and just hunt through the OS. Or you could try and Google Xandros.

Really Retired.....REALLY!
the sd cards only 'magically append" to the ssd when used in linux.
It does not do that in windows, which doesn't come on the ssd version from acer anyway, but if you wanted to switch later it might be an issue.

I had to install an additional driver for the 'storage expansion" slot to get the sd card to load as a local disk. Otherwise it just installs as a removable disk and you can't install most applications or updates to it.
