Angelos family agrees to sell control stake in O's to David Rubenstein

Good news for Baseball, bad news for the Blue Jays.

David Rubenstein is the multi-billionaire co-founder of The Carlyle Group, one of the biggest players in Global economics.

The Orioles have a ton of controllable young talent, one of the best farm systems, and now they have ownership with deep pockets, with the guy who pretty much wrote the book on making money calling the shots. The big question is whether the ownership will take the MLSE route and treat the team primarily as a revenue-producing asset, or whether they want to spend like the Dodgers.

Rubenstein is a Baltimore native. His ownership group includes Cal Ripken, Jr. and Grant Hill, (Rubenstein and Hill are both alumni of Duke University). I know nothing about Rubenstein other than what's on his wikipedia stub.

Rubenstein is noted for his philanthropy. A picture of him after he bought the last privately-owned copy of the Magna Carta is in an issue of National Geographic among my toilet magazines. That's something really special for a lawyer to own.

Spending money in baseball usually doesn't work out. As you mentioned, the Dodgers spend huge and have 1 WS to show for with a major asterisk beside as it was during a screwed up shortened COVID year. Padres spent more money then they have the fast years, big swing and miss. Arizona one of the lowest payrolls in the league. The Rays never spend but somehow have good teams every year.

The Mets finally thought they were going to be a good team when Steve Cohen purchased. Highest payroll in the league, don't even think they've made the playoffs since her purchased them. Yankees haven't made much noise in years and they too are always one of the big spenders.

The Orioles are primed to be an elite squad for years. They just traded for Corbin Burnes to anchor their staff which has up and coming stud Grayson Rodriguez and solid back end arms in Kyle Bradish and John Means. The infield is filled with (potential) all stars Adley Rutschman, Gunnar Henderson, Jackson Holliday and Jordan Westburg. The only thing going against them is they lost their lights out closer Felix Bautista to Tommy John surgery.

The AL East is a juggernaut. And here we have Atkins who's sitting at the kiddie table. Doesn't bode well for our future.

Beautiful stadium and a good young team. Too bad the city is a complete disaster. Went to a game there a few years ago and was shocked to see the empty buildings, shopping centres and homes. And obviously drug use and homeless people.

Lot's of American cities going through that. San Fran which has a good reputation is going downhill.
