I'm not an expert, but I've had one since 2001.

You don't have to purchase software to start a blog - there are a ton of free sites out there.

Among the best, imo, are LJ and Blogger.

LJ is http://www.livejournal.com . It has a more community oriented, discussion type feel to it. It's really simple to use, allows you to add 'friends' via shared interest, offers community/group blogs, and has some decent skins in the free version, with more available if you upgrade to a paid account.

Blogger - aka BlogSpot - is at http://www.blogspot.com . You can host a Blogger either on their server, or on your own, as you prefer. Either way, the user interface, while more complex than that of LJ, is still very simple to customize for anyone with basic html skills.

I've used others, but these are the two I've found I prefer. I maintained both a blog and an LJ for a while, but now just do my LJ...

Just to be sure here..... a blog = an online forum for a person to express their opinions a bit like an online public diary. Correct?

Where does the word blog come from?

My guess is b(iographic)log but its just a guess.

Six Apart (the co. behind movable type) merged with LJ some time last year....

I keep a list of well written, interesting, sexwork/porn related blogs. I follow about 200 or so of them, with about 50 that are consistently worth reading.

A good, fairly new one is Rollertrain - it's about a woman working for a new porn start up. http://rollertrain.blogspot.com/

The best of the BDSM/Fetish related blogs is, imo, Matisse's - http://mistressmatisse.blogspot.com/
