best music sharing service?

I had napster. Then I had kazaa and kazaa lite. What is the best file sharing operation on the net right now?

I only care about music, not movies or videos.

Any suggestions?

Why you little thief!
I've been using WinMX to get most of my songs, Soulseek is also good if you are patient enough to get accepted by others who share your tastes.

I downloaded bearshare and it really screwed up my computer...took forever and a lot of work to get rid of it and get my computer back working again.

LIMEWIRE. That's what it's called. My friend told me to try that after kazaa screwed my computer up, but i kept looking for limeRIDE. duh.

I've used Shareaza and Ares. Worth checking out. Lately I've been using Bit Torrent a lot though at times it's hard to get what you want (still trying to get episode 4 and up of Carnivale plus anything from Ally McBeal).

A lot of times just better off buying the DVD for all the time and memory consumption downloading.

music sharing

Stay the hell away from Kazaa. It is nothing but trouble looking for a place to go. Unless you are paying to download the music, you never know what you are going to download from someone elses computer. I downloaded music from kazaa and ended up with enormous problems with my system in spite of having anti-virus.

It's called the "Public Library", which has no real possibility of being shut down by "Big Brother".

I am somewhat disappointed with most file sharing systems, except for Limewire. At least, with Limewire, you aren't out in the cold if you have a Mac.

The nerve of the Feds! We pay a surtax on recordable media to pay for artists' royalties, and they tell us it is illegal to copy!

I know this topic has come up before and I know there are folks here who in most no uncertain terms consider this stealing. But the sharing of music has been going on forever--who hasn't lent or borrowed an album from someone so they could tape it? I see this as the same thing, although obviously on a much grander scale.

yes, but the government is also in on the take, through the Royalty surtax they charge on recordable media.

To put it harshly... it IS stealing. It's fine to make copies of music that you purchased for your own use. But not to distribute.... or make copies of someone elses music.

It's always been illegal. The record companies never cared that much because the quality of the copy was never as good as the original so people were still encouraged to buy the original. However the digital revolution in music changed everything. Now it is possible to make near perfect copies of the original. And so much easier to distribute copies. Many people see no value in buying the original anymore. This is why we hear so much about piracy today. It's always been illegal but they are cracking down on it recently.

Okay, okay. But 100 or so years ago, when I was a kid, I used to borrow vinyl albums from buddies all the time and tape them. They'd borrow albums from me to do the same. This was illegal?

Yup. But like I said, the record companies didn't care as much back then.

Look - I'm not trying to come down on you or anything. I did it then I rip my friend's CD now too. I'm just saying that it is indeed illegal and as hypocritical and anal as it was for Metallica to sue downloads, they were within their rights to do so. I am not in denial that I am violating some copyright law. Just like I know I'm doing the same when I download some cracked SW or using some shareware beyond it's trial period.
