My sister, who lives in Windsor, is getting married in a few months and I'm giving her away (my father is recently deceased). I have to get measurements done for a suit and send the numbers to her, since all of the clothing is going to be purchased in Windsor.

Anyways, I've been reading some very mixed reviews on the web about the various places in Toronto. Who can you folks recommend in the West Downtown Toronto or Etobicoke area? Or can I just walk into a Harry Rosens and merely pay them just for the service of measuring me (and not buying a suit)? Or is that just tacky? What are the rules?

Thanks in advance.

I've only had one suit custom-tailored, and it took 2-3 fittings to get right. Just sending numbers may not get a suit the fits well. Is there any way you can go to Windsor for the fitting?

There's actual made-to-measure where they draft a pattern for you alone, and there's custom assembly where the standard pattern parts that best match your measurements are all adjusted to go together. Both require at least one fitting at the partial stage, usually more. Of course, there's always really basic where an 'off the rack' pattern is used and the only thing custom is the fabric, with just the alterations you'd get if you'd bought off the rack.

As you can see, a lot depends a lot on the fitter, and if Sis or your Dad's springing for it, you do not want to waste their money and spend the day in a bad suit. If she tells you it's a Just the Alterations case, you can take the chance. But unless you're a really standard shape sorta guy, it would be unwise to break the connection between the fitter and the tailoring for either of the more ambitious options. Either go to Windsor, or have the tailor in Windsor set something up with a local guy he trusts.

Do auto mechanics work through long distance analysis?

Do physicians diagnose over the phone?

Do you want to look like you are wearing a potato sack?

I didn't think so.

Therefore, you need to be measured by the tailor who will be working on your suit. Each tailor has his or her own way to do things and the only proper way is to be measured by the one who will be making or modifying your suit. So, get out to Windsor and get measured up, that is the only way to ensure that you will get a proper fit. Trust me, my SO is a seamstress and she has had to do numerous corrections to long-distance screw-ups because of the absence of the customer being measured up.

Ah...okay, that makes sense. I guess I'm going to Windsor in short-order.

Thanks folks.
