Blackberry Curve or Pearl?

First off...

....it is soooo fuckin' cool that TERB has this forum for us to talk about all kinds of sheit where we can ask for advice or give input on a wide range of topics other than strange STD symptoms one may get from an EE SP 40 and above....or the best place to get a PM from an MP....man!

Anyways, time to upgrade the phone.
I'm confused between the Blackberry Pearl or the Blackberry Curve.

Any input, advice from you more experienced users?

thanks,
Steve.

the curve is a "smart phone" meaning its very multipurpose, with calendar, contacts, music, synchs with outlook and other contact managment software, will allow you to connnect to the internet and send/recieve email.

I'm new to blackberry, but isn't the Pearl just a simple phone, that may be have mp3 capeablitites and send recieve text messages too?

I've owned both.

I'd recommend the Pearl if you find its compact size a big plus. You can also type disgustingly fast on it with SureType.

The Curve has that perfect sweet spot. It's size and screen is just right. Another plus is with its full keyboard, you get more shortcut keys to use in each app on it.

I'd wait a little bit before going for either as the Blackberry Tour just came out. I expect Pearl and Curve prices to drop soon.

Both are smartphones, both will do the same thing. The Curve has a full keyboard, the Pearl has a condensed keyboard and a very decent, learning predictive text.

I prefer the Curve, but if you want something slimmer, go for the Pearl.

I've used both, and prefer the curve. The full size keyboard is much easier to use.

I don't get why so many people feel that "manly" technology has to be so large.

I love technology, especially mobile when its in a small form factor (as long as its not at the cost of usability). I find that it increases the utility of it.

I have both. A Curve for work and a Pearl as my personal smartphone. Both offer the same features (ie. fully functional Blackberry smartphones)

Pearl advantages:

- it is the hands down winner for ease of typing. Fastest "keyboarding" smartphone on the market. Suretype is amazing - if you are going to do mostly emails or texting, the Pearl cannot be beat.
- slim and sleek, fits into the front pocket of your jeans without being noticable

Pearl disadvantages:

- small screen
- awkward when typing in webpage addresses. The Suretype that provides such superlative performance when typing emails, is a pain in the ass when typing web addresses, or when trying to spell out email addresses that are not already built in to your address book. There is a double-tap option you can use for distinct-letter typing, though, that solves this, but you have to click a few extra times to swap between Suretype and double-tap.

Curve Advantages

- bigger screen
- easier to type with if you have fat fingers
- single-key letters makes web address typing easier

Curve Disadvantages

- big and bulky (in comparison to the Pearl)
- slower typing on the qwerty keyboard, as opposed to the Pearl

So.....the right fit depends on your intended use. If you don't care about the size of the browser screen, if you will be doing a lot of message typing, and if you want something small and easily packable, get a Pearl. If you are a larger person with big hands, or if you intend to do a lot of internet surfing, get a Curve or some other BB with a larger screen.

Consumer Reports says:

Blackberry Pearl 8120: A smart phone with a solid set of e-mail tools, though it won't allow you to create or edit documents and spreadsheets. It has Bluetooth support for wireless hands-free communication, a 1.9-megapixel camera,. and a music player. It can also be used internationally. Navigation: trackball."

BB Curve 8900: "A smart phone with full PDA capabilities that allow you to create and edit spreadsheets and text documents. It has Bluetooth support for wireless hands-free communication, a 3.1-megapixel camera, and a music player. It can also be used internationally. Navigation: trackball."

Both recommended.

yes, the pearl is damn quick for typing, but if you don't text a whole lot or write a lot of emails then go curve.
the tour just came out this week and it's better than the curve for typing and has more features than the pearl and the curve. however it comes with a nifty price tag, unless you sign a new contract with someone. g'luck.

I bought a Pearl using the same analogy as the iPod classic vs the nano,ie. I want to minimize the bulk and weight that I have to carry around, and I'm prepared to trade off some functionality (if I don't need it) to get the portability.

Black pearl is not feminine.
