No big, exciting moves yet.
AA trying to piece together a bullpen gets a 41 year old leftie specialist Darren Oliver (evidently ranked as top FA available for this role) and today reacquire Jason Frasor.
Agreed - no big exciting moves yet. But, the bullpen should be stronger than last year but not yet great enough to instill confidence if, or when, the Jays get to the post-season.
Here's the bullpen with last year's stats
Closer: Santos 63.1 IP; 30 Saves; 1.105 WHIP; 92/29 K/BB ratio; 13.1K/9; 4.1 BB/9; 0.9 HR/9 (1 good year doesn't make a closer so we'll have to see what he does in 2012)
Setup Man: Janssen 55.2IP; 1.096 WHIP; 53/14 K/BB ratio; 8.6K/9; 2.3BB/9; 0.3 HR/9 (pretty dependable guy all around)
LH Specialist: Oliver 51IP; 1.1137 WHIP; 44/11 K/BB; 7.8K/9; 1.9BB/9; 0.5 HR/9 (41 years old, nuf said)
Middle Reliever: Frasor 60IP; 1.400WHIP; 57/26 K/BB; 8.6K/9; 3.9BB/9; 1.1 HR/9 (K's are fine but he's got to cut down on the hits and BB's)
Middle Reliever: Carreno (24yrs old) 15.2 IP; 0.957 WHIP; 14/4 K/BB; 8.0K/9; 2.3BB/9; 0.6 HR/9 (young, controllable with upside potential in the pen)
Long Relief: Villanueva 107.0 IP; 1.262 WHIP; 68/32 K/BB; 5.7K/9; 2.7 BB/9; 0.9 HR/9 (was a good addition last year with ability to be a 6th starter)
Long Relief: Litsch 75 IP; 1.293 WHIP; 66/28 K/BB; 7.9K/9; 3.4BB/9; 1.2HR/9 (may have found his calling as a long-man as he was frustrating as a starter)
Fransciso, Rauch and Camp all had worse WHIP's than all but Fraser. As a closer and setup man Fransciso's and Rauch's stats are worse than Santos and Janssen.
I can live with Oliver and Frasor for now but would like to see them upgraded next year via the trade route of FA signings.
