Alex Anthopoulos has made a trade with the Philadelphia Phillies.
Jays get OF Ben Francisco, 30, in exchange for LHP Frank Gailey, a minor leaguer.

Francisco batted .244 in 100 games for the Phillies last year. He had six home runs and 34 RBIs.

Trigger Alex is on the move again, way to go. Let's bring the playoffs back to Toronto and let Jose bat us to a World Series Title.

No big, exciting moves yet.

AA trying to piece together a bullpen gets a 41 year old leftie specialist Darren Oliver (evidently ranked as top FA available for this role) and today reacquire Jason Frasor.

Agreed - no big exciting moves yet. But, the bullpen should be stronger than last year but not yet great enough to instill confidence if, or when, the Jays get to the post-season.

Here's the bullpen with last year's stats
Closer: Santos 63.1 IP; 30 Saves; 1.105 WHIP; 92/29 K/BB ratio; 13.1K/9; 4.1 BB/9; 0.9 HR/9 (1 good year doesn't make a closer so we'll have to see what he does in 2012)
Setup Man: Janssen 55.2IP; 1.096 WHIP; 53/14 K/BB ratio; 8.6K/9; 2.3BB/9; 0.3 HR/9 (pretty dependable guy all around)
LH Specialist: Oliver 51IP; 1.1137 WHIP; 44/11 K/BB; 7.8K/9; 1.9BB/9; 0.5 HR/9 (41 years old, nuf said)
Middle Reliever: Frasor 60IP; 1.400WHIP; 57/26 K/BB; 8.6K/9; 3.9BB/9; 1.1 HR/9 (K's are fine but he's got to cut down on the hits and BB's)
Middle Reliever: Carreno (24yrs old) 15.2 IP; 0.957 WHIP; 14/4 K/BB; 8.0K/9; 2.3BB/9; 0.6 HR/9 (young, controllable with upside potential in the pen)
Long Relief: Villanueva 107.0 IP; 1.262 WHIP; 68/32 K/BB; 5.7K/9; 2.7 BB/9; 0.9 HR/9 (was a good addition last year with ability to be a 6th starter)
Long Relief: Litsch 75 IP; 1.293 WHIP; 66/28 K/BB; 7.9K/9; 3.4BB/9; 1.2HR/9 (may have found his calling as a long-man as he was frustrating as a starter)

Fransciso, Rauch and Camp all had worse WHIP's than all but Fraser. As a closer and setup man Fransciso's and Rauch's stats are worse than Santos and Janssen.

I can live with Oliver and Frasor for now but would like to see them upgraded next year via the trade route of FA signings.

no clue what Anthopolous is doing. First he deals Frasor, now he gets Frasor back. He says Hill and Johnny Mac will be back. They aint coming back. We hear, w,re in the running for a top Japanese pitcher only to find Texas scoops him up under our noses. We sign a 40 year old reliever when clearly there are younger ones available. There is no hope in hell Fielder or any serious slugger to back up Bautista will be here next year so get use to another year of mediocrity Jays fans,,,,

Pieces of the puzzle.
Frasor was an asset to move to help aquire Colby Rasmus.
He reaquired Jason Frasor (competent reliever) because White Sox are cutting payroll.
A.A. NEVER said Hill or JMac would be back.
The Yu Darvish auction was a sealed bid process, no way to know what another team is bidding.
Oliver's best statistical years are 2008, '09,'10, 11, great signing with little to no downside for Toronto.

I don't want the Jays to sign Fielder if it's going to take a 10 year deal to get him.
Bad economics, not the way to build a winner.

I read that Frasor was the set up man for Santos in Chicago and may do some of the same here.

As well, Luis Perez is in the bullpen mix.

It's possible that Frasor is the setup man but Janssen is a little better option in that role as he gives up less walks and hits than Frasor (Janssen's 0.224 opposing batting average versus Frasor's 0.257). Frasor also gave up 10 stolen bases and 7 HR's last year to Janssen's 2 and 2. Makes Frasor a little more dangerous on the mound in the critical setup role. Where it makes sense is that Janssen can go for more than 1 inning at a time if needed. Frasor is good for 1 inning but you don't want him out there for a 2nd.

The Jays could do what they did last year with an extra arm in the pen which may make a spot for Luiz Perez possible but I think that's unlikely unless they move an outfielder to two. His 1.554 WHIP and 0.287 opposing batting average is working against him when compared to Carreno's 0.957 WHIP and 0.200 opposing batting average.

If another front-line pitcher isn't added the Litsch will be needed as a long-man to bail out Cecil and Drabek if they get into trouble early. McGowan will be given the chance as either the 5th starter or in the pen as another long-man. Perez still has options so I think he'll spend most of the season in Triple-A getting the occasional call-up due to injuries.

It's good that they are stocking up on bullpen arms...like last year, people were not fulfilling the roles that was initially defined for them; and a lot of shuffling ...and while last year's bullpen was definitely a problem, at least they had enough interchangeable parts that they were able to move people around. For now, the only role that seems set is Santos as the closer, Frasor may start off as the setup man, but if he falters, at least Janssen can take over...

I can see Casey and Frasor ham and egging it if Farrell can use them correctly. Both experienced and fairly reliable.

I think the bullpen last year was very respectable except for the disastrous role of closer. It's so hard to project someone in that role and most guys only have flashes of domination, 1 or 2 years and then they lose it. What are there, maybe a half dozen closers in the league right now that have been solid for over 5 years?

I said earlier that with all the young arms they have, maybe they can start grooming someone from inside the org. That way, cheap controllable contract, no big free agent to deal with, no giving up talent in a trade. There's gotta be someone down there.

Jays sign 44yr old SS Omar Vizquel to a one year, non-guaranteed, contract.
Also close to signing Morrow to a three year contract.

Jays need a bat(s)!
I agree. I hope they have at least 'kicked the tires' on Fielder.
I also hope that this is AA on a dictated budget and not him refusing to even look at Fielder on his own.

I'm all for Fielder too. He is young and if he will takes a 5 yr deal or a 5 yr with options they should be giving it serious considerations.

AA may start to feel some heat if this doesn't look like at least a playoff team soon. So far he has had a pretty soft ride.
If the team is 500 again and Fielder may have made the difference, going to be a lot of people pissed.

Nice I like our bullpen more now.

CL Sergio Santos
SU Francisco Cordero
SU Casey Janssen
MR Darren Oliver
MR Jason Frasor

All of these pitchers above had a good year last year overall.

MR Luis Perez
LR Carlos Villanueva

AA still has to fix our starting rotation.

Don't forget Jessie Litsch as a long-reliever if they want 13 pitchers instead of 12. If they don't find another starting pitcher via trade they may want another long-man in the pen. If so, Luis Perez has options and may be the odd man out if they decide to only go with 12 pitchers since they still have 5-6 outfielders to find homes for. Being a lefty though, they may want to keep him around.

Don't know if the starting rotation needs fixing in so much as it needs a real #2 or Ace to head up the rotation. Romero is proving to be very good but all the other guys are playing about 1 slot up in the rotation then their current performance dictates. The current #2-#5 guys all have "potential" to be slotted there but right now we have #3-#6 guys in those rolls. Pineda would have been a nice fit at the #2 slot but all the other candidates this year via FA or Trade we just way too pricy to jump at.

Unless there are a ton of extensions signed, the FA list over the next 3 years is stocked with great #1-#3 guys. Patience may not be a bad strategy after all if the Jays can land one. Here's but a sample (* Option):
2013:
- Hamels
- Cain
- Geinke
- Haren*
- Ervin Santan *
- James Sheilds *
- Marcum (it might be nice to bring him back as a #3 or #4 guy)

2014:
- Lincecum
- Wainwright
- Garza
- Jair Jurrjens
- Josh Johnson

2015:
- Felix Hernandez
- Kershaw
- Verlander
- Johan Santana
- Josh Beckett
