Board Question

If someone logs onto the board, but doesn't log off, is there a set amount of no activity time that automatically logs someone off? I do not mean the cookies type thing, but just a breaking connection type thing.

Thanks for any info you might have.

there's no connection between you and board, only for a few milliseconds when it's transferring data to you and back

HTTP is a stateless protocol, which means you aren't connected for a significant period of time; your browser does it's business then disconnects

the server puts a cookie on your computer that indicates that you are logged in, and your browser presents that cookie everytime to make another request

depending on the server setting, that cookie may or may not time out

I've been logged out when taking too long to finish typing when posting a reply.

this confirms it, the cookies DO timeout

virtually infinite cookies (i.e. with a huuuuuge timeout) are a bad thing, clog up the server's memory

Then I guess my next question is what is the time out rate on the "logged in" cookies, or how long after there is no activity until the cookie deletes itself?

Yes, I agree, but some cookies stay longer than others, and the browsers do not always clean them out, so we must go in and delete them occasionally.

I never log out. The next time I re-start my computer the next day or next week, it recognizes automatically that I'm logging back in without having to re-type my name, password, etc.

i suddenly have a craving for Oreos...where did that come from?
really? I would have thought that a discussion about cookies on a sex related website would evoke thoughts of a certain female organ
