The organisation La Passerelle I.D.E. received a federal grant of $1.5 million to rescue women from prostitution in Toronto. It appears they could not find any sex workers to save. Two members of the staff of the organisation were asked to invite some of their friends to a leadership and empowerment event. The 26 women who attended had their details collected and their names were connected with the program to help women transition out of the sex trade. The women who attended all work in marketing. consulting, public relations and government.
The lawyer for the organisation says the program is meant to save women from informal prostitution. This is defined as entering into intimate relationships based on economic dependence. He says women in this type of relationship do not see themselves as prostitutes.
