Anybody but me think/realize that Brett Lawrie has the chance to become the most famous Blue Jay ever. Nothing against guys like Alomar, Halladay, Steib, and Carter, but Lawrie is a player with star-upside and he is Canadian. What do you think?

My opinion (which is very unpopular because he's unproven) is that he has the potential to have George Brett numbers. Perhaps, he was named after the Hall of Famer?

Please, let's all get a grip.
He's a great prospect but let's all reserve judgement for about 3 years.
OK?
Try not to turn this kid into a basketcase like happens with most young Leaf players, for example, who get overwhelmed with fan expectations and the insane Toronto media. Nazim Kadri anyone?

It's early but he looks to be a special talent. The swagger, the look, the charisma, his ability to go the other way, and every swing has authority. Kinda like a Robin Yount/Pete Rose hybrid.

The question is does he have a chance to become the most famous Jay ever ?

Among Canadian fans he has a very good chance, as long as he has a solid career, being Canadian will get him some notice up here , won't do anything for his fame in the states though.

Not necessarily. If he can perform, he'll get noticed. I used to think the same way you do, but the fact the Jose Bautista got the most votes ever for the All Star game gave me optimism that people do notice and appreciate performance.

Exactly. I'm not asking about HOF, MVP, or even All-Star status. Just thinking that if he becomes an above average player, and stays with the team long-term, how much of a team icon he could become.

Hope you're sitting down.

I totally agree.

Apparently, some people thought his grand slam HR celebration was "over the top" and in poor taste.

Anyhow, he seems to have all the tools to be a top tier player but then I thought Wells and Rios also had the tools as well.

Being a Canadian, and a Jays fan Ill admit I may have a bias when I say I don't think it was over the top, simply because this was his first major league grand slam, with his team behind in the score to boot ,that is something that is WORTHY of celebrating, now if he starts doing that with every home run he hits, that's a different story.

There are many batters who just stand at the plate when they hit a homerun, that is far worse than a rookie being genuinely excited about hitting a grandslam.

That celebration was not "over the top". Lawrie made no attempt to show the pitcher up. It was just youthful exuberance and it got the rest of the team excited.
I watched parts of today's game and I wonder what happened to the excitement generated last night? It did not carry over as I had thought or maybe hoped.

I was thinking do I care if he is Canadian ... I am excited about Brett Lawrie the player and not that he is Canadian ... The sucess of Canadians in MLB recently makes me less surprise or excited everytime a Canadian comes up anymore ...
There have been Canadians who have had success in MLB , but none of them have had those successes as a Blue Jay.

Little League World Series on today and the Canadian team is from Lawrie's hometown of Langley.
When introduced eight kids said their favourite player was "Brett Lawrie", three kids said "Jose Bautista", and one misguided child said "Derek Jeter"
Apparently, after the LLWS the team flies to Toronto and Lawrie is having a party, guests at a Jays game, and BBQ for them before they go home - all on his dime! Nice gesture!

The kid has too much swagger.

He a little big for his britches right now.....

I suspect he will crash back to earth at some point!
