He may get another beating from the inmates once he goes to jail.
A man accused of trying to rape a 70-year-old woman landed in a New York City hospital instead after police said he received a beating by neighbourhood vigilantes.
The New York Police Department released surveillance footage of the suspect, seen with no pants on, alleged to have sexually assaulted the victim around noon on Good Friday.
After the video was shared by investigators, police said an anonymous caller revealed the next day that a group of concerned Bronx residents managed to track down and detain the suspect before administering street justice.
Cops were then told they could find the injured suspect in hospital.
Oswaldo Ramos, a 50-year-old man with 19 previous arrests, was arrested on Sunday and charged with attempted rape and burglary.
One resident said he admitted to taking part in the beating.
“Yeah, we beat him up,” a man who didn’t want to be identified told the New York Post.
“You don’t do that. That’s something you don’t do. And if he comes back, I’m going to rock him again.”
“We don’t tolerate that kind of stuff around here,” he said. “You won’t see any video on it. No cameras.”
A concerned neighbour said she would have taken matters into her own hands.
“I would have done the same thing because that could have been my grandmother, it could have been anybody,” Stenller Contreras told WNBC. “I would have done the same thing.”
Contreras said she has grown tired of the justice system releasing accused criminals back on the street.
“He deserved what he got. I’m sorry,” Contreras added.
Police sources told WNBC that the suspect is not cooperating with investigators to help identify his attackers.
