You should be able to buy one for under a grand rather easily. The key will be what you want to use it for. If you're not into heavy graphics/gaming, then you'll save a significant chunk of cash.

If you're not a techie, I'd recommend buying a pre-fab unit. You'll overpay at Futureshop or Bestbuy, but they'll do all the work for you. I recommend Logic Computer House in Mississauga (I think they have a shop in the east end too). They'll build you a custom unit based on what you need.

I wouldn't recommend Windows Vista at this time. Wait until all the kinks are worked out. Since you're buying a new computer, you can get the cheaper OEM version of Windows XP.

Definitely get at least a GB of RAM. Flat screen monitor is around $250. Probably around $500-$600 for processor, hard drive, motherboard, and RAM. Throw in a case, mouse, keyboard and you're probably talking around $800.

If you want to use it for graphics/gaming, you'll need more RAM and higher end video card which will cost you more.

If you're cannibalizing parts from your old system, you'll save some money. Just make sure everything is compatible.

Hope that helps!

If your computer is really old, you might need a new case. With power supply, it should cost you around $50-100.

for a 1000 it might be easier to buy a system from hp or dell. if you want to build it yourself i'd use this. 2Gb of memory is the minimum i'd get. there are issues with vista but i've never had any and since there is nothing really fancy like SLi you should be fine.

I think the sli feature might be a bit much, considering he said he doesn't game (very little if any).
Unless he's a hardcore gamer, then he doesn't need to buy an SLI mobo or a heavy video card. Save himself another $40-$75.

Thanks for your responses, they are very helpful.
I am beginning to believe I will have to buy a package as I want a new monitor and the packages seem to include the monitor for the same price as building a unit without the monitor.
Besides Future and Bestbuy any other recommendations? Dell?

You're going for a package system?
ie - HP/Hell or whoever else?
I refuse to give you any more help... :p

Building your own = best bang for the buck.

Not sure what I'm doing or going to do.
I am finding out that I know even less than I thought.
I have a fair bit of time before I have to make a decision
and am trying to gather as much info as possible.
Any recommendations, suggestions, advice etc. will be welcomed.
Please keep it coming.

You're serious ?

Anyway... stick to your budget limit, make a list to things that you need the new system for , such as net surfing/photshop/burn DVD ro whatever ...etc, then go visit the shops mentioned and try to get the best price for the system.

That's an easy start , no ?

I'd stay away from Dell, MDG if I were you.

Berlin, correction, it's Hell, not Dell. :)
Sony sucks for comps, HPs as well.
Nothing like a computer built to your liking (specs). =)

Your advice is what I am planning on doing.ASN gave me a good idea as to what I need. The thread on monitors is also going to help.
The advice on Dell, MDG is the info I am looking for .It confirms what other friends have advised.
Don't want to under buy like I did when I got this system.
Have not heard of some the places recommended and they appear to be the places to buy from.
Again thanks to all and keep the info coming
