is now ( April 7th 2008 ) a good time to buy Laptops? Or is there a season where they will be cheaper, or new technology coming up soon?

What's the inside scoop gents? :)

by the way, what's a good brand name? I just looked at an HP today.

17"
2.1 ghz
4 gig RAM
Nvidia 512 meg card
320 gig HD..

for $1500..

Is HP reliable?

Based on personal experience, I would say mid-Dec when all these laptop manufacturers want to get rid of their old models. Bearing in mind that every 2 to 3 months, these manufacturers can come up with new models. A new model today, may not be up-to-date a few weeks from now.

Anyway, 2 years ago, I ordered a refurbished laptop from IBM (now Lenovo), I received a BRAND NEW one, in an unopened, sealed box. Phoned & told them that there was a mistake because I ordered a refurbished one, & I didn't want to pay for a new one.

The answer? It was an un-advertised X'mas special, no change in price, i.e. for the price a refurbished one, I received a brand new one.

My guess is that a lot of people ordered re-furbished laptops during that time that they ran out of refurbished ones; however, they must honour their commitment, so they dish out new ones.

Prices are still dropping in the US. Yesterday's paper had my 2 month old Toshiba laptop a hundred bucks cheaper than what I paid. For the same money I could get one with more features today. Vista, included on all, is now advertised coming with SP1 already installed.
SP1 definitely speeds up Vista. If you didn't install it yet, just do it.

There is always new technology just around the corner. The best time to buy is when you are ready or have the need to buy. Pick your price point and see what gives you the best combination of features for your needs.
HP, Toshiba and IBM are all good machines. I am not as keen on Acer, whilst the technology inside is excellent, in my experience the build quality of the case lets them down.

if you watch the prices closely you'll notice before the sale the prices go up and during the sale they sell it at the price it was before it went up.
